What Now America We made a video from the photos of our Halloween Carnival. The volunteers from UC Berkeley said they had a blast and were really impressed by WNA. Yay! We hope they come back and volunteer again soon. Thanks for all your help!

What Now America This past Saturday was another fun art day. It’s fun both for the youth as well as the program committee. We, members of the program committee, sometimes find ourselves fighting over the art days because they are so much fun to plan and lead. Anyhow, have you heard of the Paper Box World or Cubeecraft? You should check... them out, but in short, you print out these layouts of different characters like Ninja Turtles, Sonic, Chomp or what have you and its really simple... you cut out the shapes, fold on the dotted line and you have a “paper box” version of the character. In our case, to make it a little more challenging and artsy, we printed out the outlines of the shapes instead of the fully colored character so the youth could color it themselves. Here is Naar (Kid of the Day), and her “paper box” character, Chomp. Read more:

What Now America First Saturday of the month is SCIENCE DAY! This Saturday we covered the anatomy of the eye, the importance of our rods and cones, retina, pupil, and iris and how any malfunction or change can affect our vision and perception of colors. Overall, we had a great day, the kids learned a lot and appreciated all the time sp...ent talking about a body part we all can relate to as we use it on a daily basis and take for granted.

Youth at WNA create volcanoes with their water bottles, sand, warm water, vinegar and baking soda!

What Now America WNA youth build volcanoes: We first glued the bottle to the tray, and then covered the rest of the bottle in glue with our hands (very messy). Then, we sprinkled sand over the gluey bottled and it stuck! So, it looked like a real mountain, although a bit of an odd shape. Check out the video on our blog:
