San Francisco Bicycle Coalition has ridden through the Presidio and enjoyed two new stretches of car-free space. If you love it too and want to discourage drivers from using a National Park as a high-speed, rush hour shortcut, please help us prevent the trial from being ended early by e-mailing presidio@presidiotrust.gov in support.

Thanks to everybody that chimed in!

Mary, we'll get better about including our own letter in future callouts. (For example, this week's Biker Bulletin has a link to our letter on the extended parking meter hours proposal.) It's really about your personal experiences though.

Allen, yes, certainly Doyle Drive will certainly change over the next ... See Moredecade, but we think it's never too early to encourage traffic calming throughout the park for the safety of park users as well as the preservation of the natural beauty of the park itself.

Because I was called out by name here is my response:

Asking FB readership to discourage drivers from using the Presidio through an email campaign isn't traffic calming or helping preservation of the natural beauty of the Presidio (a garrison turned National Park). A proposal to consider making better roads for both bikes and cars might be more effective. Closing the roads didn't make less cars but increased the danger for bicyclist where the cars were allowed at greater numbers. During the test my son (age 10) and I were bicycling through Arguello Gate and the increase of cars was threatening. I was nervous not only for my son but myself. I have peddled through the park for thirty years and never felt uncomfortable before. Residences of San Francisco (City North) have used the Presidio since inception. "Shutting down logical thoroughfares without offering an alternative is not planning—it’s just obstructing." Trying to start an email campaign from people who might not use the Presidio regularly (or at all) is as bad as stuffing a local ballot box.

Closing Presidio Blvd. increased what used to be a simple drive to many parts of San Francisco. An increase which could increase air carbon. The Girard interchange (Doyle Drive) seems unfortunately placed however (unless you work at Letterman) and will increase traffic. If you are serious about calming future traffic this would be a good place to encourage focus. ... See More
