The Frick Collection Irish artist Daniel Maclise painted a scene in 1833 of Halloween merry-making in Blarney, Ireland. Back then, it was called All-Hallow's Eve. Before that, it was the Celtic festival of Samhain. To learn more about this painting or other spooky art, visit the Frick Art Reference Library. We are open 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Halloween. Costume optional.

The Vermeers, Rembrandts and Holbeins upstairs are well known. But only a fortunate few have seen the bowling alley.

I was employed at The Frick in the early 1980s and used to bowl here. The balls had only one hole and we needed a pinboy to set up the pins. Right near the bowling alley, there is a really great pool table that we took advantage of too. Another memory was playing the organ at night after everyone had gone.

The Frick Collection Portraits, Pastels, Prints: Whistler in The Frick Collection, June 2 through August 23, 2009

Between 1914 and 1919, Henry Clay Frick acquired twenty works by James McNeill Whistler: five paintings, three pastels, and twelve prints, a remarkable ensemble that represents the breadth of Whistler’s artistic activity and testifies to Frick’s taste as a collector.
