Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium

Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium Our orphaned African painted dog puppies are now one month old. Of the nine we had, five have survived and seem to be thriving (Normally half of a litter dies, even with a mom. Without, the pups faced long odds). Credit goes to Honey, their surrogate mom, and the Zoo's vet staff, which has been working around the clock with the pups.

@Donna, no, Honey is fine. Clayton, whose comment I deleted, is either confused or trying to stir up trouble.

Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium In other animal news, check out this story of a leopard seal trying to teach a National Geographic photographer to catch penguins...

www.boingboing.net
Brian Lam showed me this amazing short video yesterday. It chronicles an encounter that National Geographic photographer Paul Nicklen had with a giant leopard seal in Antarctica who, over the course of four days, fed penguins to his camera and tried to teach him how to catch prey.

I saw this video the other day and absolutely loved it. Leopard seals have always been near and dear to my heart, and this just makes it even better.

Congratulations to the lucky kid. I am also glad it was a kid who can now visit whenever he wants and get to know the many animals that he may have never had the chance to see and learn about them from the freindly staff or or a docent that might be in the area. Maybe he will decide he likes animals and will persue a career with them.

Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium Looks like a great week of sunny weather coming up (except for tomorrow, perhaps). Could anybody use some weekday-only zoo passes? I'll give four to the first person who can tell me what Pittsburgh Zoo animal's name was inspired by the same fashion movement that lent a line to the song "Yankee Doodle."

Macaroni penguins got their name after the gaudy, 18th century "macaroni" style of dress that's referenced in the song "Yankee Doodle."

So, I would purchase a ticket for me, my 7 year old and my 2 year old, but does my 9 month old baby need one as well? He really wouldn't be partaking in any of the activities, and would probably just hang out with me in the carrier.

Something tells me you'll receive hundreds of offers to provide Honey with a loving home after her surrogate duties are over. In the unlikely event you have any trouble she's welcome to join my family - we have three dogs already but she's special enough I'll make room for one more!
