"What I like about the term alchemy is that you take traditional ingredients
that would separately be just "normal this" and "normal that," and when you
combine them, because of symbiotic relationships, you get much more out of the
mix than if you were to leave them separate."

Well, in the comments on the website, there's been a lot of meticulous debate about whether or not you can actually see the Great Wall of China from the moon. (Laughs) It's a saying. The saying doesn't have the full power if you don't use the actual language that it normally comes with. ...

With a career that has spanned nearly 70 years and is still in the
making, Risom made his mark designing one of the first chairs to be
manufactured by Knoll®. Constructed of a birch frame and surplus
parachute straps, the chair made the best of the few materials
available during WWII. When Risom began his collaboration wit...h Knoll in
1941, they set about on a tour of the new "modern" home to gain insight
into what would be needed to market a line of modern furniture. After
consulting with the architects along the way, Risom was encouraged to
try out a few of his Scandinavian-inspired designs that fit the modern
bill and the new modern home. The result was the Jens Risom collection,
which was featured in one of the first Knoll catalogs.

A request from Florence Knoll Bassett to create "a chair she could curl up in,"
led to Saarinen's 1948 design of the Womb Chair and Ottoman. In the decade that
followed, Saarinen created a range of office chairs for Knoll, as well as his
classic Pedestal Table and Tulip™ Chair. Saarinen's stated objective with the
Pede...stal Collection was to clear up the "slum of legs" in domestic interiors.
Like his furniture, Saarinen's architecture is characterized by expressive
sculptural forms. Among his masterworks are the TWA Terminal at Kennedy Airport,
New York; Dulles International Airport, Washington, D.C.; and the Gateway Arch
in St. Louis, Missouri.

architecture made of inert materials and, well, make architecture that grows
itself. She proposes a not-quite-alive material that does its own repairs and

They may photograph well, but the city's architecturally significant home aren't selling. And so the owner of Wright's famous La Miniatura house in Pasadena,
which hit the market about a year ago for more than $7 million, lops
off another million. Just recently, he'd dropped it to $6.97 million
(that price is still reflec...ted on firm Crosby Doe's web site, but the
price just dropped again).
