Anton Schwartz JazzTimes magazine, an important institution in the jazz world, ceased operations last month, citing financial troubles. We all assumed this was permanent, but it has now been acquired by a Boston based group and will resume its web site and its magazine, beginning with the August issue. Dodged a bullet!

Effective 7/10/09, the JazzTimes brand has been acquired by Madavor Media LLC.

I was wondering what happened. I couldn't find it anywhere. The mainstay DownBeat is still there and in some ways, I think, might be a superior Jazz mag

Anton Schwartz Talk about retooling Detroit... am I the only one who didn't imagine it would look like THIS?

This Ford Focus ad features 21 instruments made from the parts of two new Focus cars. The video shows musicians using the instruments to play a specially commissioned piece (the actual sound track of the ad) by film composer Craig Richey.

Doesn't bring me any closer to wanting to buy a Ford Focus, but it's a pretty composition. (Shame about that windshield though.)

Rod Schwartz Anton Schwartz: Just discovered your jazz page via the guestbook you set up for Tony. Listening to "Radiant Blue" as I type. You might think about getting in touch with John Clayton to see if he can't get you into the Lionel Hampton International Jazz Festival here next February. Based on what I'm hearing, you'd be a great fit, and I'll bet you'd enjoy it immensely.

Hey, saw that Peter Sprague is playing on the gig with you. I used to go to his gigs in San Diego in the early 80s. He and his brother Tripp were pretty young guys then . . . weren't we all . . .

Yes, they're great players. They both played on the record. Tripp couldn't make it up for the gig, so I get to step in. :)

Anton Schwartz Clear Channel has decided that people don't like Smooth Jazz enough any more and have replaced KKSF, its flagship Smooth Jazz station, with a Classic Rock station called 103.7 The Band. Personally, I'm not sorry to see KKSF go; I'd rather listen to classic rock than smooth jazz any day. Still, I can't imagine the airwaves need another station playing the Stones and the Who. Hang in there, KCSM!

wow...KKSF was such a mainstay for such a long time...that station helped me tons when I was a product manager/buyer at Virgin/SF! Long live Jazz & Rock-n-Roll...but...Smooth Jazz has it's place as well....Music...our salvation!

Wow! Totally missed that item. Obviously, I didn't listen to it often but it was nice knowing it was there for just because or when the odd mood struck (and for when in an area where couldn't get KCSM ...obviousely not the best car radio).

Huh, that's a surprise. But really, KKSF had about as much in common with jazz as, well, Classic Rock.

Anton Schwartz The Bay Area's jazz community lost one of its most beloved on Monday... Remembering Ron...

Ron Stallings, a tenor saxophonist who performed with Bay Area rock heavyweights such as Huey Lewis and the News and Boz Scaggs, as well as with several prominent local Latin jazz ensembles, died on Monday in the Berkeley home of his partner, Susan Marchionna, after a long battle with cancer.
