As Clara mentioned e-mail is being abandoned for social related communications by the younger generation (i.e. Happy Birthday, Plans for the weekend) but is still the primary route for business/enterprise related communication. See More of the enterprise I would agree with Robert that content needs to be separated from email. Collaborative companies will begin to use email more like a Twitter posting with the core content being linked to within the content of the mail. This trend will emerge as companies upgrade their KM and collaboration tools and the leadership encourage users to change their behaviours (i.e. Send a Link rather than an attachment)

The problem is that e-mail was not designed for what people use it for, calendar reminders, to-do lists, attachments, URLs.
@Connor, I agree with e-mail being a tool for 'work', but with all the e-mail and spam, it becomes a great chore to manage.
