Will County 4-H in Illinois is in danger of closing!!!
Will County Board Plans to Eliminate Extension Funding
The Will County Board of Commissioners reduced the funding for Extension from $60,000 to
$25,000 in 2009. Moreover, the County Board Finance Committee has recommended zero
funding for Extension in 2010 and be...yond. If funds are unable to be restored in the 2010 budget,
it is more likely than not that Extension will have to close its doors. The University will not
allow the Will County Extension office to operate without adequate county funding, and witha
deficit budget that has been caused by this reduction of funds.
Furthermore, under federal law, it is essential that local county government provide funding for
Extension. The Extension program has been in operation in the county for close to 100 years.
Funding Extension has been a good use of county dollars. Every dollar the county directs to
Extension is matched between 85-100 percent by the State of Illinois. In addition, if financial
support for Extension is lost, we also lose the support of professional staff, funding from other
agencies, and countless hours of volunteer service valued at almost $800,000. Last year alone,
the Extension program had more than 40,000 Community contacts.
Let’s Keep Extension In Will County:
We do not know of other local organizations capable of offering the youth development,
horticulture, and nutrition programs we provide. Here are a few examples:
Without our Youth Programs:
· Who will teach leadership, citizenship and life skills to about 300 4-H youth, ages 5 to
19, in Will County4-H Community Clubs?
· Without our Youth Development program, who will meet the needs of over 4,000 youth
including those at risk by offering after-school and summer programs, youth relationship
programs, leadership programs, embryology, and Natural Resource Days, etc?
Without our Family Nutrition Program:
· Who will teach nutrition classes to more than 8,000 participants including food-stamp
recipients?
· Who will provide enrichment programs to about 2,000 children on hand washing, and
hopefully reduce flu?
· Who will teach the residents of local homeless shelters and after school programs about
eating healthy foods, healthy cooking classes, to join the more than 900 individuals that
learned to cook and eat healthy foods through Extension?
Without our Master Gardener Program:
· Who will be on the front line answering over 8,000 questions regarding home ownership,
Emerald Ash Borer, environmental questions, horticulture, crops, bugs, gardening,
insects, weather, and more?
· Who will bring therapeutic horticulture programs to children, and young adults with
special needs?
· Who will bring gardening programs to over 3,000 youth across Will County who wonder
where our foods come from?
· Who will provide hands on community gardens, in cities, and libraries spreading from the
City of Joliet, to areas across the County?
Let’s Keep Extension In Will County:
1. Contact:
a. County Executive Larry Walsh (815-774-7480) and

d. Include a story about how Extension programs have impacted you or your family.
2. Attend the county board meetings. County board meets the third Thursday of every
