I would like to add that chlamidiosis as well as loss of habitat is creating a massive toll on all koalas, we must do what we can to fix this problem asap. The raymond island Koalas were riddled with the disease and unfortunately "inbred" due to being cut off from other populations. We need to find pure breeds that are healthy to repopulate the ... See Morespecies and educate others on loss of habitat due to the human tribe. mostly we need to be mindful that we SHARE this planet with other sentient beings and "BACK OFF" and rethink our place, which isto coexist with all Creature Teachers in harmony "so mote it be"... It all starts with You & I & Ours.

Bean Bag is a 12 month old male Southern Hairy Nosed Wombat that was shot 5 times and left to die on a remote South Australian station. Bean Bag was rescued during the Wombat Awareness Organisation's routine Mange Management inspections with suspected mange, malnutritio...n and misplacement. Covered in bite wounds and abscesses, Bean Bag was taken to the Wombat Intensive Care Unit for further assessment and treatment. His wounds coincided perfectly with wombat territorial aggression and he was placed on a course of antibiotics. Once the infections subsided hard substances were felt under his skin. After surgery from our favourite vet a .22 calibre bullet was removed just millimetres from his spine. Another four bullets were located around his shoulders and chest but will not be removed until his recovery is more advanced. Bean Bag will make a full recovery however the question remains of where can he be released? There are more culling permits issued now than ever before and people are breaking down gates on private properties just to shoot wombats for fun, Sarcoptic mange has already claimed up to 80% of certain wombat populations. Bean Bag highlights the reality of wombat culling and the need for the continuation of the Wombat Awareness Organisation's Rescue and Rehabilitation Program and the importance of securing and protecting a suitable release site.

Sam Carroll Sam the Koala: The Koala Hospital Port Macquarie now has an official facebook page. Please join!

The Hospital was first established in 1973 by a concerned local couple who initally cared for injured koalas in their home. Now, the Hospital now contains a treatment room, eight intensive care units, multiple recovery yards, as well as a 24-hour rescue and treatment ...operation. The Hospital is also a research facility for the University of Sydney's Koala Infectious Diseases Research Group whose principal focus is divining a cure for Chlamydia which may affect almost half the koala population. Apart from Chlamydia, motor vehicle accidents and dog attacks are the most common cause of injuries sustained, predominantly during the breeding season. Bush fires also have a devastating impact on the koala population. The Hospital is open to visitors 8am-4pm, 365 days a year. With the exception of our Supervisor, and Leaf Collectors the Hospital is staffed entirely by volunteers, without whom the Hospital simply would not exist. The cost of operating the hospital is over $140,000 per year. As we receive no government funding, we rely heavily on funds raised through our Adopt A Wild Koala Program, donations, bequests and other fund-raising activities.
