WASHINGTON, D.C., November 27, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) - President Obama's brief proclamation of Thanksgiving Day on November 26 was unique among all recorded Thanksgiving proclamations by his predecessors: it is the first one that fails to directly acknowledge the existence of God.

A pile of rubbish from non-historians and revisionists of history!

http://www.pilgrimhall.org/ThanxProc.htm Not all President's read a proclamation.

George Washington proclaimed a National Day of Thanksgiving in 1789, although some were opposed to it. There was discord among the colonies, many feeling the hardships of a few pilgrims did not warrant a national holiday. And later, President Thomas Jefferson opposed the idea of having a day of thanksgiving. Many also felt it was "mimicking of European customs". http://gwpapers.virginia.edu/documents/thanksgiving/intro.html... See More

It was Sarah Josepha Hale, a magazine editor, whose efforts eventually led to what we recognize as Thanksgiving. Hale wrote many editorials championing her cause in her Boston Ladies' Magazine, and later, in Godey's Lady's Book. Finally, after a 40-year campaign of writing editorials and letters to governors and presidents, Hale's obsession became a reality when, in 1863, President Lincoln proclaimed the last Thursday in November as a national day of Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving was proclaimed by every president after Lincoln. The date was changed a couple of times, most recently by Franklin Roosevelt, who set it up one week to the next-to-last Thursday in order to create a longer Christmas shopping season. Public uproar against this decision caused the president to move Thanksgiving back to its original date two years later. And in 1941, Thanksgiving was finally sanctioned by Congress as a legal holiday, as the fourth Thursday in November.

I congratulate the Court for displaying good judgment. It must have been a difficult call for some of the justices.

A number of recent incidents suggest that our long-standing commitment to the free exchange of ideas is in peril of falling victim to a spreading fear of violence. Not only have exhibitions been closed ...

If raelians are atheists, then I will have to find a new ideology. I don't want to be associated at all with raelians. That's like calling Scientologists atheists.

that is not what i meant at all; i mean that the term 'atheist' itself is a hindrance. we've already gone through the motions and people are stuck on the catcall 'NU UH!' to 'there is a god'. move on. promote the scientific method and reason and morality without muddling yourself up with the argument of god. while we need people like Dawkins, ... See MoreIngersoll, and Paine, they make it possible for the rest of us to focus our pursuits in the absence of religion, instead of spending all our time refuting it. let me say that again. we need bulldogs. but there's no point or future in diverting all our resources to refutation.

What we need is more more more replacing, defending, and supporting godless lifestyles, schools, charities... Basically we need to augment yelling no, with the rest of life from our logical perspective. The religionists have thousands of years' head start on us; ie people assume religion when they think of AA, charities, missions, after/during ... See Moreschool programs, even a lot of political activism. While debating god and religion is a good start, and must continue to be heard, we've got to show the world that there is life without god, and life more abundantly, to steal their quote.

We must support those that asks us for it. Tyranny is intolerable, especially religious tyranny in the 21st century.

The fact that fewer than 40% of americans believe in evolution is very sad. When science is ignored by otherwise rational people who choose to believe fairy tales instead it is no wonder we are not able to address major global problems like global warming. We are our own worst enemies.

You know, you reminded me of something... last summer I started calling funeral homes and asked them if they have atheist services. None of them could answer me. What will happen when I die? I don't want to go in a church, or have a priest come to the funeral home. Who will speak? What will be said? What will be done? These are questions I've asked, and that I feel I need to work on answering.
