substitute. That's not the term I'm disputing. That term is used all the time. The part I'm questioning is that PIX said "I am the way, the truth, and the life". Perhaps he did say that "in persona christi", however I can't find a source for it and it seems to be causing a lot of confusion for Evangelicals.

@Ben, The word 'vicar' comes from the Latin vicarius and means representative, not substitute. The title 'vicar' is also used for some Anglican clergy.

Thanks, Gary for clarifying the word vicar. I don't think HAURIETIS AQUAS is the correct reference. That encyclical was written by PXII. The supposed quote is from PIX. Also, unless I'm totally missing the outerlying context, the quote in the encyclical is no way meant to be applied to the pope (himself).
