Greetings!

I'm an atheist zionist of sephardic origins. Let me share some thoughts about this conflict.

1) Genetic and archeological studies have suggested that most palestinians are actually descendants of ancient israelites (hebrews and canaanites) who converted to Islam during the arabian, egyptian and turkic occupation periods. That means they should be accepted as mizrahi jews/israelis. But because they're deeply attached to Islam and because many israelis still follow their own religious religion, the recognition of their common roots seems too difficult for now. That is to say that the way to peace in this case also implies cultural convergence, rationalism and humanism and, subsequently, it means that both sides should quit religion, since religion is substantly based in mythology and because of its very own nature it can be easily used to justify segregation hate and violence.... See More

2) Because i consider the palestinians as israelis (just like many portuguese, spanish, south americans, lebanese, jordanians and even afghans whose ancestors were converted to different religions) i'm all for a one state solution, that is, a solution that includes the West Bank and Gaza as part of Israel and its population as part of the israeli society. The israelis are divided in 3 main groups: sephardi, ashkenazi and mizrahi. I think the palestinians could very well fit in the last group. The main common language would still be hebrew but arabic, farsi, portuguese, spanish, english and russian should be the main secondary languages. This should be considered a strategic cultural asset and not a problem.

3) This State of Israel should have a republican, secular, liberal and social-democratic nature. It should recognize as israelis not only the palestinians but also any portuguese, spanish, greek, italian, south american, lebanese or even afghan who has israeli roots and whishes to live in Israel.

To me this is the best way to achieve peace and progress. It's time to reunite the all people of Israel but this also applies to the entire world population. it's time to realize were all equal human beings living in the same planet under the Sun.
Its up to the palestinains and the israelis to set an example to the all world; an example of Humanism and Rationalism. If other neighbouring countries would follow this, then it would make sense to think about the formation of a Euro-Asian Union that would include countries such as Israel, Lebanon, Syria, Turkey, Armenia and Georgia. Even Iran could be part of this if it also accepted this new cultural and political change.

There are great advantages to this vision of zionism: both sides would be living in cooperation and peace as one nation with 3 main subcultural groups (sephardi, mizrahi and ashkenazi); the palestinians who lost their homes in Israel would get new ones in compensation; the refugees would be allowed to return and also get new homes to settle; both sides would now have a larger territory to live in, a bigger and more stable economy, a wellfare state, a better education (directed towards the values of Humanism, Rationalism), more natural ressources and better chances of joining the European Union and perhaps the possibility of setting the foundations for the Euro-Asian Union i just mentioned above.

But i'll say this again: this vision implies a process of cultural convergence, rationalism and humanism which will inevitably lead both sides to quit religion.
