Prince has a stall/paddock living arrangement and even though he is 27 years old, I don't worry about blanketing him until we have temps at night in the teens and daytime temps in the 20s or it is raining/snowing and windy. He has a heated water bucket and does get his calorie intake upped when it is cold. His stall has at least 3" of shavings on... See More the floor so he can lay down and still be warm. I do have a hair dryer and lots of towels on hand in case he gets wet. He really loves the hair dryer.

My 30 year old still likes to stand outside and get snowed on, but she seems to sweat under a blanket, so we will have to see how she does. Her caloric intake (and appetite) are both increased, and so far she is holding her own weight wise. She has a LOT of bedding and if the weather gets really bad, I can close the door to her (very large) stall and just turn her out inside the barn! My Tenn Walker is a tubby boy, the cold weather will do him good! :-)

I only blanket a horse if haircoat is light and the horse seems to be shivering. It is my understanding that horses produce heat by digestion of hay. Like feeding the furnace when a horse is working on eating hay their body warms up. My filly of 5 months was shivering when we had unseasonable lows in October. Blanketed her at night and if really cool. She gradually became more tolerant and now is doing fine without a blanket at all.

MyHorse.com An Extra Flake - Ready, Set, Out the Door
I’m happy to report that I’m no longer “fixin” to launch a daily inspirational email, but it has really happened! “An Extra Flake”(http://www.inspiredbyhorses.com/subscribe) is officially two-weeks old, and I have been overwhelmed with the positive response I’ve received.

My plan... was to use this flake to encourage and inspire people, to be a bright spot in their day. I have prayed that the right words would arrive in someone’s e-mailbox at just the right time.

MyHorse.com Don't Chase Your Loose Horse
Any horse can get loose on the trail, so here's a plan to catch him.

www.myhorse.com
Don't chase after a loose horse because you may further scare him. Instead, the riding should stop walking, use a soothing voice and avoid looking the horse in the eye.

MyHorse.com People often ask me what to do for "navicular disease" or "colic." Well, there is no answer to that question because there is such a wide variation as to cause or severity that treatment needs to be based on the individual case. That is why diagnostic procedures and their interpretation become critical to the choice of... treatment and a desired result. | Read More

Using hoof testers on the foot as a diagnostic aid to help localize soreness is a simple, inexpensive and still a very efficent diagnostic tool

Join your local Horseman's Council. We have to keep our trails open!!! By letting your State/Federal & local parks see that we are using them they have a better chance of staying open. Don't just ride them we also must help to maintain them. Get out there and help with trail maintenance. If we don't do it they are going to be closed. It's happening every where.

MyHorse.com To Horses, We Speak a Foreign Language
During the last few months, I’ve been mulling over the question of how we “talk” to our horses, especially while we’re on their backs. I began pondering it as I was putting together my October Horse Journal article “Your Legs: The Key To Communication, Position,” research that made... me acutely aware of how imperfectly several of our students were using their aids. | Read more....
