Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB)

Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) If you can get past the picture of the COD:MW2 superfan, this is a great piece about how parents can be informed about games they consider for their kids. Hint: use rating summaries so you know what's in the game before you buy it!

With Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 finally on store shelves, nows as good a time as any for a public service announcement reminding parents that M-rated games like Modern Warfare 2 and

ESRB, I'm just wondering. I'm pretty sure you've noticed the constant increase in Rated M games. Many of these however, aren't from sex or nudity, but rather realism (Blood and gore from being hit by a bullet). I'm just wondering, why does realism make a game an instant M? We're watching that junk on rated T movies and here the F bomb 20 times a ... See Moreday in school. I'm just wondering. Sorry if I sound a little harsh, I just think you need to come out with a type of rating between T and M for this type of realism but no sex. Thank you for your time.

Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) An interesting article recently in the Calgary Herald about the evolving and maturing role of sexuality in video games...

www.calgaryherald.com
Sex and video games have had a long and sordid past. From the constant portrayal of women as large-chested sex objects to shallow, mini-game sexual encounters, video games have taken a flippant view of sex and sexuality since the 1980s.

I'm not saying that it requires defense, or doesn't, Only making mention of something I've regarded as funny (in a not funny way :P) for a while.

@Spenser I know what you are getting at...the irony I'd expect. Kind of like when the school shootings started happening and they blamed everything on Quake and Doom(monster killing) and failed to mention anything by the great Tom Clancy series'(killing people instead of monsters).

Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) ESRB now offers a monthly list of the top-selling games, complete with ESRB rating info and rating summaries for each title on the list. This is a great way for parents to keep up on the games their kids are likely to be asking about...and it never hurts to be a step ahead (except when you're dancing). :)

my only real complaint with this is that some games are listed twice for different systems. I agree that the different platforms can certainly effect the rating/quality of a game, but it's also annoying when a game shows up 2 or more times in a top 10 list =\

I hear ya, Virginia, but we actually just use the list that NPD provides, which includes total unit sales regardless of platform. I know it can be a little redundant but hopefully it's helpful nonetheless. :)

Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) Congratulations to the winners of the ESRB's rating summaries micro-essay contest: Juri Peterson of Lakeside, CA, Richard Hosler of New Haven, IN and Joshua Conway of Los Angeles, CA. In addition to receiving a console and games, they'll each join ESRB for PAX East in Boston next March and be featured in ESRB's 2010 PS...A campaign (including being turned into Penny Arcade characters in the ads). Thanks SO MUCH to everyone that took part in helping spread the word to parents about rating summaries!
