Through photographs, d...ocuments and ephemera reproduced on panels, Tempted, Misled, Slaughtered: The Short Life of Hitler Youth, Paul B. depicts how the Nazi state seduced an entire generation of German youth into active participation in its destructive mission through propaganda and control of the educational system. As the title suggests, the exhibit examines the devastating impact of the nazification of Germany’s youth, focusing on the experiences of a single Hitlerjunge (Hitler youth) and soldier, Paul Bayer, and demonstrates how totalitarian governments strip away basic human rights and use all of their citizens for their own agenda.

The exhibit concludes with a section outlining the current use of child soldiers in countries throughout the world, grimly reminding viewers that even today children remain particularly vulnerable to exploitation by governments, guerilla regimes, and militia groups. The Coalition to Stop the Use of Child Soldiers, an international human rights organization, cites that children were actively involved in armed conflict in government forces or non-state armed groups in 19 countries between April 2004 and October 2007, affirming the historical topics addressed in the exhibit remain relevant today.

Included in the exhibit is the 1933 German propaganda film Hitlerjunge Quex, the first feature-length film supported by the Third Reich and produced under the protection of Baldur von Schirach, the Reich’s youth leader. The 90-minute film is based on Herbert Norkus, a young boy who was immediately memorialized as a hero and martyr by the government after being killed while distributing leaflets in Berlin during the 1932 election. Hitlerjunge Quex illustrates the Reich’s embrace of cinema and the moving picture as a propaganda tool, and exemplifies the Reich’s unmitigated control over all media.

Tempted, Misled, Slaughtered: The Short Life of Hitler Youth, Paul B. is presented in collaboration with the Holocaust Center of the United Jewish Federation of Pittsburgh and the American Jewish Museum, and is one of numerous Holocaust-related events taking place throughout Pittsburgh this Fall to commemorate Kristallnacht.

The exhibit is supported by the Holocaust Center of the United Jewish Federation of Pittsburgh Exhibition Endowment Fund, and the American Jewish Museum of the Jewish Community Center of Greater Pittsburgh. This program has been supported in part by the Pennsylvania Humanities Council, the Federal-State partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Support for the American Jewish Museum is provided by the Allegheny Regional Asset District, the Anna L. Caplan & Irene V. Caplan Philanthropic Fund of the United Jewish Federation Foundation, and the Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts, the regional arts funding partnership of the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency.
