"Senate Democrats are having second thoughts about corporate tax breaks that the Legislature never should have granted this year.

Legislators and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger slipped in the cuts, which could eventually total $2.5 billion a year, as part of the February budget under heavy lobbying from business groups and ...without public hearings. They did so under an inflated promise of jobs and despite the strong inkling that the state deficit would continue to swell. Which of course it has.

Now, to stave off devastating cuts to education and social programs, Senate President pro Tem Darrell Steinberg has raised the possibility of rolling back the tax cuts, most of which would benefit multibillion-dollar corporations. On Thursday, 75 labor and consumer organizations urged lawmakers to do so, calling for no more budget cuts until "these egregious giveaways" are ended."
