Unshackle Upstate

Unshackle Upstate One piece of legislation that wasn't on the agenda this week was the bill to cap per diem rates of elected officials. As a result, the dubious special session cost taxpayers $35K.
What will it take for taxpayers to finally stand up and demand accountability for how their tax dollars are being spent? Hopefully soon be...cause the Money Train is running out of tracks...

ALBANY, NY - Today, Unshackle Upstate blasted leaders of the legislative majorities for returning to their old ways of closed door sessions and failing to address the budget gap in a fiscally responsible way.

Are we surprised that the dems refused to do anything? They didn't even want to vote on the "other" issues. I truly believe that they want to accomplish nothing.

Unshackle Upstate Assembly Minority Leader Brian Kolb called last night's legislative session "...a complete and utter failure to the people who count the most, the residents of New York State." Now more than ever, we need leaders who are willing to roll up their sleeves and resolves this budget crisis!

How about reforming Medicade for one. We have the most extensive benefit package in the country. Why cant ours be like some other states. Next, lets get rid of some of the special interests. And lastly, NY state needs to revise their pension system. Everyone else is making sacrifices. Now its their turn.

First, stop the bleeding. New York State, especially upstate New York, is losing its lifeblood of jobs and, as the jobs drain away, its population. There are other consequences as well: Two more congressional seats are likely to be lost after the 2010 Census.

I contact my elected officials all the time about our sky high taxes and they never ever reply. They simply do not care what their constituents think.

Does it really matter today. Gov tries to cut education because of last years stimulus payments making surpluses in every district,....proposes cuts to hositals, prisons, state workers and all he gets is,.............unions and everyone fighting to keep the money from getting cut. Everyone loses.

Unshackle Upstate The TU is reporting that the special session for next week may not happen. This was the time the legislature was going to deal with the deficit. Either they don't care that the deficit is growing, don't have the courage to make the cuts, or are worried by the anti-incumbent results from Tuesday. Whatever the reason, our burden just keeps growing.

Unshackle Upstate Here is today's installment of the Daily DRP Did You Know. This one is about the rainy day fund. Any State Legislator that talks about using the rainy day fund is simply trying to avoid making tough choices. Now is the time when we should be cutting spending and adding to the rainy day fund not depleting. When you ...hear an elected official say we should use the fund, feel free to correct them.

Any raid of the rainy day fund amounts to a tax increase, since the fund will have to be replenished in the near future to deal with, God forbid, a real emergency rather than just Albany's inability to make tough decisions.

Why should we add to it? It's okay to have some contingency budget but not in the amount that they have. Cut spending period. . . it's Economics 101. . . economic downtime = less taxes and decreased spending. When are they ever going to learn.

Unshackle Upstate Rather than delivering workable solutions to New York's budget woes, the Senate and Assembly majorities have issued analyses of Governor Paterson's Deficit Reduction Plan. This stall tactic is a classic example of Albany's dysfunctional legislature. 368 days to go until Election Day 2010!
