Editor’s note: This is a guest post from Mike Hagan, AoM’s resident bartender. Mike last tackled the 5 classic cocktails every man should know. Today, he gives the non-drinkers among us tips on how to wet their whistles when they’re out at a bar.

I agree with most of the Manly stuff on this site, but not this one. It is NOT manly to act this way. I don't drink, and I don't need to "disguise" it... is it really manly to care what someone else thinks to the point of "disguising you drink... seems very unmanly to me with shades of highschool.

Edward Norton whines for hours, and transforms into an alter ego that believes the only way to evolve his humanity is to stick his fingers in his ears, move into a hovel and stop trying. Narcissistic and nihilistic. My grandfather would be ashamed to think that any men would enshrine this kind of victim behavior.

I agree that Pitt is the extreme end. However, I believe the movie is too focused on romanticizing Pitt's anti-capitalist nihilism, and ridiculous hyper psuedo-masculine infantilism. All while portraying Norton as a completely helpless corporate lackey. In the end, Norton does come to see the pointlessness of Pitt's existence, but I didn't find ... See Moremuch in the way of redemption for the character. Nor any real rebuttal of the mindless, childlike narrative that Pitt preaches. I actually liked the movie as entertainment. I don't have to agree with the values to enjoy a movie. I just thought it too interested in portraying Pitt's views; those being the more controversial and thus entertaining views.

All I'm trying to do is point out that: its important to ruthlessly scrutinize all that is fed to us by the news/entertainment/political/literary establishment. These people would have us sit silently, absorbing what they're selling without thought. They feed off of our apathy. And the shit starts to sink in. The young may not always understand ... See Morewhat they're seeing, but the cultural narrative gets through over time. I thought the film was entertaining, I enjoy lots of incredibly stupid entertainment, but I'm not willing to sit back and not challenge the film maker and writers point of view. It is possible challenge the premise and have a good time.

But, the challenge put forth was nihilistic. You can challenge material culture, but still like a nice couch. I wanted Norton to man up a little more at the end. He rejects Pitt, but not as much as I would have liked. He just reacts to Pitts extremism, without articulating the need for a middle ground. But, what do I know? Brian says I'm just a fag who doesnt recognize a legend.

I constantly wonder how many men actually have a fight club of some sort. Norton's character sitting in a large meeting, suddenly flashing his secretly bloodied mouth at a smiling yet startled co-worker. Reminds me of some mornings in the office. I look at other men around the office and wonder if they're just waiting for tonight's fight.
