Leaving A Baby's Umbilical Cord To Stop Pulsating (Delayed Cord Clamping)

Leaving A Baby's Umbilical Cord To Stop Pulsating (Delayed Cord Clamping) Obstetricians are reluctant to adopt the recommendation. Difficulty in clinical practice was the main reason. There is that novel logic that if you are "farming" cord blood for stem cells to deal with potential lukemia in the future that there just might be a benefit to leaving the cord intact so the baby can have it's own stem cells -- naturally?

Leaving A Baby's Umbilical Cord To Stop Pulsating (Delayed Cord Clamping) " In adults, a stroke is caused by loss of blood flow to part of the brain. In the newborn, insufficient blood flow damages those parts of the brain that are actively growing. When a large amount of the child’s blood is clamped in the placenta, blood flow in the brain is impaired and injury results. "

Leaving A Baby's Umbilical Cord To Stop Pulsating (Delayed Cord Clamping) “General hospital-based obstetric practice introduces artificial clamping as early as 1 minute after the birth of the child. In birthing centers , this may be delayed by 5 minutes or more, or omitted entirely.”

I went to a hospital birth a while back, and the doctor's ridiculous excuse (explanation) for not wanting to delay cord clamping was that if the baby is held higher than the placenta, the baby's blood would all run out of the baby back to the placenta (baby basically losing it's blood)!!! I almost fell to the floor laughing hysterically! Being a ... See Moremidwife, I knew this was the most insane idea ever!! I've attended over 100 births, most being delayed clamping, never a problem! Silly docs! I wonder if they actually believe this?

Leaving A Baby's Umbilical Cord To Stop Pulsating (Delayed Cord Clamping) Marsden Wagner, Former Director, Women´s and Children´s Health, WHO: “If you really want a humanized birth , the best thing to do is to get the hell out of the hospital”. Early cord clamping was not either evidenc...e-based before it was introduced once upon a time. Nevertheless , despite numerous moderns studies who prove it is harmful , most western maternity units continue to apply this interference. Some scientists believe autism, cerebral palsy, etc. is caused by immediate cord clamping. What if they are right?

So it's still going on today. Thank goodness I had a fantastic support group, ended up going AMA, leaving the hospital and finding one that used cervadil for my induction. CRAZY!

I hope someone can let that physician know that 30% of a term baby's blood is left in the cord and placenta if you do immediate cord clamping. And she also said she's unaware of any advantages to delayed cord clamping. There are at least 2: an easier transition to air breathing, and less anemia in the first 6 months of newborn life. These statements are both research-based.
