Deaf veterinarians pave their own way - "A common misperception is that deaf people are lazy when they are not good at reading lips & facial expressions. 'It becomes easy for most hearing people to forget that for a deaf person, it can be difficult to communicate with just about every person they meet every day,' Dr. D...odge said. 'Many times, deaf people are just brushed off with an oversimplified explanation or 'it doesn't matter.'' This can cause frustration, she said, because it creates anxiety that another situation will come up in which the deaf person is either going to be shunted off to the side or have to make decisions on the basis of inadequate information. Simply making more of an effort to communicate is greatly appreciated." http://www.avma.org/onlnews/javma/nov09/ 091115e.asp

NOT ANOTHER ONE! Two weeks after a group of Deaf actors protested the choice of a hearing actor for a Deaf role in an upcoming Off Broadway production, the issue has surfaced again: Should producers have chosen a Deaf or Blind child actress to play Helen Keller in this winter’s Broadway revival of “The Miracle Worker”...?
The producers announced on Wednesday that Abigail Breslin, would play Helen in the production, which is set to open this winter. Ms. Breslin can see and hear. http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/1 0/29/advocacy-group-opposes-miracle-work er-casting-choice/

Universal Signs We proudly support Dogs for the Deaf (DFD)! Rescuing homeless dogs and professionally training them to enhance lives is what Dogs for the Deaf is all about. In over 30 years, Dogs for the Deaf has rescued and placed over 3,000 dogs in homes as Hearing Dogs, Miracle Mutts (Special Dogs for Special People), Harmony's Hou...nds (Dogs with Special Needs), and Career Change Dogs. http://www.dogsforthedeaf.org/ Hearing Dogs are chosen from animal shelters. Many shelters must euthanize dogs if no homes are found for them. By using shelter dogs, DFD are able to help alleviate some of the unwanted dog population by rescuing these dogs. Once trained, they are placed in loving homes where they provide valuable and even life saving benefits.
