Today (11/8) in PLW History: 1998, eleven years ago. It was supposed to be Derek Molhan vs. Universal Soldier, but it turned into much more. Two minutes into the match Molhan accidentally pulled off Soldier's mask to reveal Shane Simons.
It turns out that Simons and Molhan, although good friends for many years, had so...me heat between each other. It started in September 1996, when Molhan came to Simons' aid after his match with T.J. Richter. Molhan announced they would form a tag team, but Simons continued on his quest for the PLW championship, which he gained in January 1997. Molhan felt snubbed and demaned a title shot against Simons, but Simons wouldn't allow it. Molhan would get the PLW championship only after Simons gave it up due to a back injury. Simons now wanted the title shot, but he, too, wasn't granted one by Molhan.
In November of 1998, after Molhan lost the PLW championship, Simons saw an opertunity to wrestle Molhan in a title match. He obtained the gear and mask of the Universal Soldier and was going to wrestle as Soldier, only to unmask after winning the match and proving that he could be Molhan in a title match. But when he was accidently unmasked the match was stopped because everyone was confused with what happened. "Lethal" Paul Lauzon was in attendance and he, who trained both wrestlers, was at a loss for words.
PLW officials, who thought the actions of Simons were despicable, announced that the match should continue (as Molhan vs. Simons) for the benefit of the fans. Regardless of the outcome the Universal Soldier was still PLW champion because he didn't wrestle in the match.Read More
