PRI's The World The rise in "Danger Tourism." Lonely Planet helps The World sort it out...

Source: www.theworld.org
More and more tourists, it seems, are winding up in places they shouldn't be. Some travel to war zones or countries their government has warned them not to visit.

I heard that the park service is charging people for rescues on Mt. McKinley, this does not seem so far fetched... does seem like we should consider our choices instead of going in ill prepared or just taking risky chances.

My feeling is that this just reflects the massive upturn in numbers of travelers and tourists. Entire generations of middle class American and European youth consider it a right of passage to go on a walkabout of some kind, and some sliver of those masses pushes the envelope and ends up walking into Iran by accident or being boatjacked. Many, many more come home safe, inspired and with a greater comprehension of the world and its problems.

PRI's The World The amazing tale of the Soviet women who served as fighter and bomber pilots during World War II. I can't believe no ones made an English language movie of this yet...

Source: www.theworld.org
The Soviet Union had three regiments of female pilots that flew combat missions during World War II. The BBC's Lucy Ash caught up with some of the women who were known as The Night Witches.

War is a terrible thing but an amazing social catalyst, and the Soviets always were "progressive" (in a PR way) on gender issues. This is an excellent sample of vintage footage.

I'd balk slightly at using the word "amazing" because it conveys a sense of surprise and wonder. It is no surprise or wonder to me that women make good combat pilots. In the western allied air forces women flew many non-combat missions including risky "ferry" flights delivering aircraft from the US to forward bases.

I read an article somewhere about Soviet women snipers. I was blow away by the picture of smiling teenage girls with their rifles. I never knew women served in WWII.

Before the Berlin Wall fell in November 1989, Hungary tore down its barbed wire. Hungary's prime minister didn't ask permission in Moscow. He just told Soviet President Gorbachev it was a done deal. Hundreds would escape to the West in a single day. ...

Patrick Cox and Carol Hills look back on the big language stories over the past month. To wit: Among them: Some birds develop distinct dialects based on the decibel levels of their habitats; Companies doing business in Glasgow are offered interpreters to translate the local dialect; The French government reforms foreig...n language teaching; And Chinese expats do battle over which script U.S. schools should use to teach Chinese - traditional characters, favored in Taiwan and Hong Kong, or simplified characters, used in mainland China.Read More

PRI's The World What German students learn...and don't learn...about the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Source: www.theworld.org
20 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, young Germans don't give a lot of thought to what was once known as the GDR or East Germany. Few know much about a state that ceased to exist before they were even born.
