Hey Cuz....hope you had a blessed Thanksgiving. Finally got to see Precious -- The movie didn't get to NC until 11/19 -- but it was worh the wait. I left the movie with mixed emotions: happy that Precious freed her soul & mind and decided to exceed her own expectations notwithstanding the trials ahead of her (young, poor, single with children [one ... See Morewith learning challenges], the prospect of her HIV diagnosis, the uncertainty of what will become of her children). I loved that she lived in "fantasy world", it kept her sane and with hope. It gave her strength to carry on (as unrealistic as her fantasies were) when she thought she coudn't. She was stronger than she ever knew. I love that she saw her mother with new eyes....a broken woman who accepted life with no hope (that Precious rebuked that life). I also felt sad though that her mother not only didn't love Precious (ironic that she named her that), but resigned herself to allow her daughter to be abused and then blame her daughter. To me it was it was a truly powerful illlustration of Nurture and Nature....the will to survive (on Precious' part - Nature)...and that it does take a village to raise a child....sometimes not even a village -- just ONE somebody who cares enough to believe in you (Nurture). You said you were interested in thoughts after seeing the film (I could go on and on because there's a lot more to take away from this story). I can't wait to read the book now (books are always better).....I believe we'll be seeing a screen play on this one in the near future......Peace and Love
