I fondly remember Dr. Geschwinder as a long-time faculty adviser to Tau Beta Pi during my time as a society officer. I think he had been faculty adviser to ΤΒΠ for many years prior and was long afterward too (may still be in fact). Thanks for that service!

In a quiet green glen near Ashville, Pa., lies a rust-colored pond. A deep, rectangular hole in the ground, it somewhat resembles an Olympic-size pool. Few people, however, would make the mistake of swimming laps there. And fewer—human or animal—would stop to drink.

The sudden death of Professor Bose is also very sad news to me and a big loss to the scientific community. Although I personally met Colleague Bose only twice in my life I know that he was a very amiable person. Of course, we all know his outstanding scientific contributions to systems theory and many other fields, especially to applications of ... See Morecomputer algebra in these fields, his singular and decisive survey articles and volumes on multidimensional systems, his valuable service as founder and editor-in-chief of MSSP etc. What also distinguished him, what we all appreciated and for which we will remain grateful to him was a very open heart and mind towards the work of his colleagues of which he not only took notice, but which he often commended publicly, orally and in writing.

Professor N. K. Bose was my doctoral advisor. He has been a very influential mentor in my life since 1983 when I took the first class with him at Pitt. He taught me that while there are so many unsolved issues in the world we should choose to work on those that are meaningful. He always aimed to do the first class research. He told me that research... See More was the first among his works. He taught me “walk and think.” That is, when I was a teaching assistant at Penn State in summer 1987 working with him to finalize my dissertation, he and I often took a walk along the campus, after dinner and before dark, we walked and talked about research, academics as well as life. He often showed his care towards my health, job and personal life. Some colleagues in my age told me the similar story. One colleague told me more than once that I have been lucky to have such a concerned senior professor. All these are wonderful memory and will be in my mind forever. Y. Q. Shi

Penn State College of Engineering Transportation pioneer Joseph Sussman will present "Transportation in Contemporary Society: A Complex Systems Approach" at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 8, in room 105 at the Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel.

Sussman's talk is the 2009 Thomas D. Larson Transportation Lecture and is being presented in conjunction with the 1...5th annual Transportation Engineering and Safety Conference being held Dec. 9-11. The event is free and open to the public.

"It is almost a cliché currently to link transportation to a variety of what we call 'critical contemporary issues' — energy, clean air and clean water, global climate change and economic development, among others," Sussman notes. "But these linkages are quite real and quite important, too. So making decisions about transportation is more difficult and more critical than ever before. In this situation, we need some new ways of thinking about transportation as a complex, sociotechnical system. This lecture takes some initial steps in this direction."

Sussman is the J.R. East Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Engineering Systems at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His 40-year career has spanned transportation education, research and leadership.

Sussman's research centers on complex, large-scale, interconnected, open sociotechnical systems (CLIOS). He has developed a new methodology for regional strategic transportation planning as a special case of the CLIOS process, integrating ideas from strategic management, scenario building and technology architectures and applying it to cases in the U.S. and aboard.

His awards include the Roy W. Crum Distinguished Service Award, the highest honor bestowed by the Transportation Research Board. Sussman has also won the Council of University Transportation Centers' (CUTC) 2003 CUTC Award for Distinguished Contribution to University Transportation Education and Research and the 2008 Career Achievement Award from the City College of New York's (CCNY) engineering school alumni group.
Sussman holds a bachelor's in civil engineering from CCNY, a master's in civil engineering from the University of New Hampshire and a Ph.D. in civil engineering systems from MIT.

The event is sponsored by the Thomas D. Larson Pennsylvania Transportation Institute.
