Punk For Peace

Punk For Peace I hope everyone had a great Christmas and ate well. Rochester Food Not Bombs is serving a meal today! Please come to St. Joe's (402 South Ave) at 4pm and help some people in need.

Food Not Bombs shares free vegan and vegetarian meals with the hungry in over 1,000 cities around the world every week to protest war, povert...y and the destruction of the environment.
With over a billion people going hungry each day how can we spend billions on war?

Peace always.

Punk For Peace What was the best part of getting cereal when you were a kid? – The prize obviously!
Do you know that STAY VOCAL ships out most orders in used food packaging, many times cereal boxes?
Do you see where we’re going with this?
This is the STAY VOCAL ReUse Cereal T-Shirt featuring the artwork of Christian Bogle. The design is... printed on the reverse side of brand new t-shirts that were originally set to be destroyed.
And ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh yes, there will be a reuse prize inside! And let us just say that the prizes are AMAZING! Prizes include cds, dvds, plush toys, band merchandise, homemade handkerchiefs, jewelry, and even dog collars.
The prizes found inside the cereal boxes come from a wide variety of friends of STAY VOCAL: bands, non profit organizations, record labels, etc.

Punk For Peace For the first time, Pentagon planners in 2010 will include climate
change among the security threats identified in the Quadrennial Defense
Review, the Congress-mandated report that updates Pentagon priorities
every four years.

The reference to climate change follows the
establishment in October of a new Center for the Study... of Climate
Change at the Central Intelligence Agency.

Punk For Peace The 20.8 percent unemployment rate for November for veterans ages 18
to 24 is an increase from the 17.3 percent rate for veterans in that
age group reported for September, indicating a deteriorating jobs
picture for entry-level positions.

The new numbers from the
Bureau of Labor Statistics reveal there are more than 1 milli...on
unemployed veterans. “That is unacceptable,” said Rep. Steve Buyer of
Indiana, ranking Republican on the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee,
who has been pushing since December — without much success — to have
stimulus funds used for veterans programs.

Punk For Peace The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is giving the Rochester area
$2.3 million to fight terrorism. The government says Rochester is one
of 62 cities at high-risk for terrorism. Our waterways, closeness to
Canada, airport, bio-tech and health care companies, and Ginna Nuclear
Power Plant are some of the reasons we're co...nsidered vulnerable. The
grant money can be used for equipment and training.

The grant money goes to New York State first. Local police,
fire, emergency management agencies and non-profit groups then have to
apply for the money and be specific about how they'll use the money.
Twenty-five percent of the money has to go to law enforcement agencies.

This is what I found so far. It kind of breaks it down a bit on what the money is going to be spent on for the 5 urban areas that got a cut of $145 million that the government gave NYS. It is actually a 14.6% increase from 2008. I will work on finding something else if this isn't solid enough.

That definitely is a good start. Also, I think it is strange that the press release is dated June 18, 2009 and the local news just ran a story on it a couple days ago.

Punk For Peace The transformation of Russia's military may be the most successful of
President Dmitry Medvedev's modernization programs, but it's not
something he talks about much publicly because it is so controversial.

The
huge project involves painful cuts and dismantling deep-vested
interests that have thrived on bloated, Soviet-style... armed forces.

Vitaly
Shlykov, a 75-year-old former intelligence officer, has been fighting
the military establishment for nearly 20 years, but at last he believes
real change is here to stay. He is chairman of a public commission
advising the defense ministry.

Under Serdiukov, the overall size
of the armed forces is being cut by one-quarter, with the officer corps
taking the biggest hit. Already, 50,000 have been forced to retire.
Another 150,000 will be pushed out in the next few years. For those
left, education and salaries are to be improved dramatically.
