Robert Blackburn, born 1920 in Summit, New Jersey, was know for his work as a printer, a collaborator, and the founder... of the internationally acclaimed Printmaking Workshop (PMW) in New York City. The success of PMW, and his work as a collaborative printer with notable artists (Jacob Lawrence, Romare Bearden, Will Barnet, Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, Elizabeth Catlett, and Helen Frankenthaler) has often overshadowed the innovation and importance of his own personal artwork.
As a pioneer of abstraction and color in fine art lithography, Blackburn often challenged the notions of what a graphic work should and could become. The prints in this exhibition cover a forty year range of Blackburn's artwork and examine his creative process through the display of state proofs. Blackburn often worked with a composition ten or twenty years, distilling it to its most essential elements. Printmaking offers the viewer a unique look into this creative process by leaving a printed record of the varying states of an image. Abstraction can best be understood by following the dramatic and subtle changes from proof to proof. Blackburn's persistence with a work over time helps to highlight a fundamental aspect of his work, harmonic tension.
