Hello everyone. I wanted to make everyone aware of a new Nigerian scam that involves housing on Craigslist. It is happening frequently in MI and I am sure it will find it's way here if it hasn't already. I didn't know about it until my sister called me last night and had to actually call 911. These prospective tena...nts thought they had a lease with her home for sale, not rent.
Please read and check your listings on CL. Scary stuff. Have a good weekend!

KALAMAZOO -- A scam based in Nigeria involving houses listed for sale has been reported in Kalamazoo, police said.According to the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety, a homeowner reported Friday that someone had shown up at their home inquiring about renting it. The person had seen the home listed as a rental property on Craigslist, but the owner said it had only been listed as for sale and had not been advertised at all on Craigslist.KDPS contacted the FBI and learned that the scam involves Nigerian perpetrators finding homes listed for sale on the Internet then posting photos and property information verbatim to a classified advertising Web site as a rental property. When someone contacts them, the scammer, posing as the homeowner, states they had to leave country quickly to do missionary or contract work in Africa. The scammer sends the prospective renter an application, tells them to send the first and last month's rent via Western Union and informs them that if they "qualify" the keys will be sent to them."Once the money is wired to the scammer, they show up at the house, see the home is actually for sale, are unable to access the property and their money is gone," the news release said.Anyone affected by such a scam is asked to file a complaint at www.ic3.gov, an Internet crime complaint center run by the FBI, the National White Collar Crime Center and the Bureau of Justice Assistance to develop and track cyber crime. They can also contact their local law enforcement agency, KDPS said.
