(re:) Directions Theatre Company (re:) Directions Theatre Company presents the New York Premiere of Figaro/Figaro!

The New York Times called the original Yale Rep production "One of the more provocative productions to be seen in the last days of 1994...a project that deserves more productions. It's full of rich possibilities."

An adaptation of Beaumarc...hais' The Marriage of Figaro and Odon van Horvath's Figaro Gets a Divorce by Eric Overmyer, who penned the modern classic On the Verge as well as doing double duty as a writer/producer on a number of television shows including Law & Order, The Wire and Homicide: Life on the Street.

Figaro/Figaro follows both the familiar tale of "Marriage" with a sleek new adaptation and then takes us into uncharted territory with the presentation of "Divorce" - a little known sequel penned in the 1930's. Weaving in the music from the iconic operas, (re:) Directions' production takes us on a journey to the familiar and strange, all the while telling a wonderful story of these beloved characters and how their relationships with each other form, grow and evolve over time.

Some reviews have started to come in!
Broadway World:
" Ralph Petrarca is a wonderful Count Almaviva, effectively managing the transition between acts. Amy Ludwigsen gives the Countess a quiet dignity. Gillian Wiggin plays the long-suffering Susanna with a mild grace. Katie Yamulla and Andrew Schechter play the comic servants Fanchette and Pedrillo wonderfully, nearly stealing the show. Kathryn Elisabeth Lawson is amusing in the trouser role of Cherubino, Drew Hirschfeld is smarmy as an officer with eyes for Susanna, and Katrina Stodd is hilarious as a meddling midwife."
"David Withrow's costumes are top-notch, as usual; all brightly colored fairy tale for act I, and drab 30s styles for act II."

J.B. Spins:
"While each recurring character changes drastically from one act to the next, Ralph Petrarca’s terrific performance makes Almaviva’s transition from blustering heavy to tragically dispossessed nobleman a smoothly credible character arc"
"it certainly covers a lot of bases, including boudoir farce, political allegory, and some clever musical interludes courtesy of arranger/composer Tom Berger. Deliberately uneven in terms of style and tone, it is an odd, but fascinating combination"
"These products of radically different times are juxtaposed to interesting effect in Figaro/Figaro"

Blog Critics:
"with nimble help from director Erin Smiley, Mr. Overmyer begins the evening with a clever, cheery, mostly well-played, compressed telling of the original late 18th century play, adorned with musical themes from Mozart's famous opera. The music comes from supporting cast members who double on an assortment of instruments, marching in and out, annoying the main characters — it's silly but quite funny."
"the leads are solid. Teddy Alvaro makes a witty and energetic Figaro, Ralph Petrarca a wry and funny Count Almaviva, and Kathryn Elisabeth Lawson a spry and winsome Cherubino. Gillian Wiggin's Susanna is especially delightful; in this telling she bears the greatest dramatic weight, along with her share of the comic, and does it wonderfully well."
"you will get your money's worth just from the first half. It's a minor tour de force of distilled, manic storytelling, expertly directed and nicely played."

Neighborbee Blog:
"an absolutely compelling performance. Without a doubt each member of the cast is strong and engaging, they give it their all and they work hard."

Talkin' Broadway:
"Figaro/Figaro combines a comical study of aristocrats, questions about public affairs, the changing role of women and a look at relationships between men and women to create a show that is ambitious"
"as the Count, [Ralph] Petrarca is more wily and humorous than anyone else, thanks to Erin Smiley's good direction"
"the visuals are immensely appealing"

Backstage:
"In his adaptation of Beaumarchais' classic The Marriage of Figaro, Eric Overmeyer combines two takes on classic characters to illustrate an intriguing before-and-after portrait. "
"An instrumental ensemble, each member of which plays multiple parts, heralds this change in tone. Playing a parallel introduction in each act, the group transforms from a troublemaking band of merry court musicians into a sultry jazz combo that creatively sets the darker, more modern mood. Costume designer David Withrow also brings each character gracefully into the 20th century, carefully updating each player's characteristic look."
"engaging performances in each act"
