"The Bible condemns idolatry," remarked a Christian visitor, "yet I've read that in every Hindu home there is at least one idol. How can Christians--and Jews, for that matter--fail to condemn this practice as heathen?"
The Master replied: "Suppose you see a little girl playing with a doll and treating it as though it were her baby. Will you scold her, saying, "That doll is merely an inanimate object'? Playing with dolls can even serve the practical purpose of helping the child to prepare for motherhood someday.
"Images, similarly, can help people to awaken and focalize their devotion. Don't Christians keep images on their altars, too,--Jesus, for example, on the cross?
"Again, think of all the images that God has given us in Nature. If we love Him, doesn't the beauty of trees, flowers, and sunsets remind us of His infinite beauty?
"The idolatry condemned in the Bible is the ego's practice of placing the creation above the Creator: of worshiping money, and not the divine treasure within the Self; of worshiping human love, and not divine love; of worshiping false intoxicants, such as wine and sex, and not praying for the 'intoxication' of divine ecstasy."

"Love cannot be had for the asking; it comes only as a gift from the heart of another. Be certain of your feeling before you say to anyone, "I love you." Once you give your love, it must be forever. Not because you want to be near that person, but because you want perfection for that soul. To wish for perfection for the loved one, and to feel pure joy in thinking of that soul, is divine love; and that is the love of true friendship." --Paramhansa Yogananda
"Cosmic Intelligence, God, is not only consciousness: It is conscious of you. It is conscious as you. You can pray to it and receive answers, guidance, and help from it. If you feel uneasy praying to your own higher Self, think of it as reaching up toward your own highest potential, which is conscious of your striving toward it, even if you are not conscious that it is ever there, waiting patiently for you to discover that level of reality in yourself." -Swami Kriyananda
