You can see what Sir Alan Reid, the Keeper of the Privy Purse, had in mind when he broke down the annual cost of the monarchy to a per capita basis in presenting the Royal Family's accounts to us yesterday. Only 69p a year for all that history, we were supposed to think.
Tim Sharp What do we republicans want from our head of state ? I want the head of state to be electable (and unelectable) by the people but not to be a party politician (no recycled prime ministers). I want to be able to petition the head of state to trigger debates and referenda when a cause becomes popular enough. I want a head of state whose costs compare well broadly with other heads of state of similar sized countries. What qualities and powers do you think you would like to see from a head of state ?
