Quote from the BBC live feed from Wimbledon: "Not a seat to be seen anywhere on Centre - except in the Royal Box, where's there's a line of eight sitting empty. Maybe they're keeping them free should Lizzy break the habit of a lifetime and fancy a Friday afternoon without the corgis." ;-) (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/tennis/8 131864.stm)

So tight, this match. If Roddick keeps serving like he has - but he isn't, Murray suddenly reading those brutal firecrackers like Peter and Jane. Stretching forehand - it's clipped the tape and flown over, and when Roddick flays a forehand wide, Murray has three break points. ...

A common argument from monarchists is that changing to a republic would all be too complicated. Too much like hard work, they say. They ask “what would the country be called?” as if that’s the killer blow to our cause. Some even suggest - quite bizarrely - that we’d have to spe

Ally Jones I understand why we have a government and that i have to contribute financially to that, for the benefit of all. But why do i have to contribute financially to the monarchy? If this country is a democracy then only the people who want a Monarchy should contribute. I can't afford a house and i drive an 11yr old car, but i am expected to pay for Charles to go on holiday or to protect Andrews already spoilt children while they are on holiday. It makes me sick and outrages my sense of fairness!!! When i was a single mum, i did a lot of voluntary work so that i wasn't just sitting around claiming benefits, I don't remember being given a huge house to live in for my efforts!!!

Republic Campaign Would you like to join Republic's board of directors? The board sets broad strategy and oversees the financial management of Republic. Candidates with experience in campaigning, fundraising or governance would be particularly welcome - but this is not essential. If you're a committed republican and can make weekend meetings in central London every two months then email g.smith@republic.org.uk for more information.

Chris Bennett Another argument the monarchists hold onto dearly is the commonwealth our monarchy presides over. I don't think it'll be that much longer before Australia goes republic, and when it does I think we could see the republican movements gaining momentum in other commonwealth states as well. We just need a catalyst.... Come on Aussies start the ball rolling!

Republic Campaign On the radio yesterday Ingrid Seward of Majesty magazine dismissively asked if we should have Jonathan Ross as president - she thinks we can do no better than Charles Windsor or his mum. Who would you like as the first British president?

It’s been a busy few days for Republic and an excellent opportunity for us to get on the airwaves and into the papers to make the case for a republic. What has struck me as I’ve debated with various monarchists is what a low opinion they have of the British people. The two most common [

I've been arguing for republicanism with monarchists on the guardian. And whilst I'm doing my level best to keep the tone civil and informative, the monarchists have been anything but civil, and at times resorting to abuse, lol!

It's a good sign that they're losing the argument.

if the monarchists do not have a valid reason for Charles to be head of state then maybe, just maybe, the end is in sight.

Paul Anthony Bailey i love to hear all the news reports on the royal family.how they cost us so little in terms of expenditure.how if britain did not have a monarchy we'd have had the nightmare of thatcher or blair as president.how our kingdom is wonderful and we dont have the divisions and capitalist obsessions of the united states.all true.i totally agree.but in all this debating we are still forgetting the facts.monarchy is morally indefensible.im not out to kill off the royals and can see they are good for tourism and tradition but slavery is slavery, and freedom brings with it no guarantees.
Republic Campaign at 8:04am June 30
they're not good for tourism.
Chris at 12:58pm June 30
Paul, the idea of a president Blair, Thatcher, Brown etc etc is one fabricated by the monarcists to keep the republican movement at bay, they know it frightens people. In a republic our presidents would be elected.

LONDON (AP) — Public funding for Queen Elizabeth II and the royal family cost British taxpayers the equivalent of 69 pence (US$1.14) each last year, according to accounts published Monday.

Tim Sharp What do we republicans want from our head of state ? I want the head of state to be electable (and unelectable) by the people but not to be a party politician (no recycled prime ministers). I want to be able to petition the head of state to trigger debates and referenda when a cause becomes popular enough. I want a head of state whose costs compare well broadly with other heads of state of similar sized countries. What qualities and powers do you think you would like to see from a head of state ?
