It is appalling that the BBC, and other broadcasting services, have opted to go with only the "big three" parties to conduct a televised leaders' debate in the run up to the 2010 General Election. T...

The title of this article will come as no surprise to Republic Blog regulars. Infrequent visitors may, however, remember me as a monarchist. I will not give a full testimony of my conversion to republicanism over the past several months, for that is contained within my Blog comments since April...

What sort of sad sad person would possibly want a photograph of any one of that nasty little family. Got to be about that Edward person beating up 2 dogs last year.

Ironically, when I am on the roads and doing my 'road safety bit, the police positively encourage video or photographic evidence. The more proof the better in case of a criminal act.. so cameras are essential if there has been a crime. We should 'protect ourselves with cameras'.

First off, I must declare an interest: as well as being a republican, I’m also an atheist. But whereas republicanism and religious faith are not mutually exclusive, the British monarchy and the Church of England, it seems, are inseparable. ...

The priests have always clung tight to the kings and vice versa. They share an overriding interest in power.

Freedom of belief appears to be enshrined in this country's pseudo constitution but freedom of non-belief is not. I, as someone with the intelligence not to need religion still has to adhere to, and respect the beliefs of those without that comprehension and that is fundamentally (!) wrong

Police confiscated cameras from members of the public heading to watch royals make their way to and from the St Mary Magdalene church on the Queen's estate at Sandringham, Norfolk. Visitors were also body searched with a scanner and officers kept a close eye on crowds lining a path.

I agree with Carmen and Marjory. The point is this is yet another example of the Royals as public figures with constitutional roles invoking the current obsession with the right of celebrities to privacy to prevent us having the access to them that we should. They didn't want any pictures that had not been through the filter of the Royal PR team ... See Morebeing taken and appearing elsewhere. That isn't right. They have no more right to privacy than any other figure in our system of governance who we pay for and who is meant to represent us. Imagine an MP instructing the Police to confiscate people's cameras in this way. Scandalous. Are you comfortable with the general public being treated like this due to the PR requirements of an unelected, hereditary ruler? It is damn scary if you ask me.

So many people come on this blog and try to denounce our arguments by saying things along the lines of “it doesn’t matter,” “there are more important issues,” “people don’t want more elections.” Amazingly enough, I agree with monarchists on this one, at least to an extent: the retention of th...
