The waterbottle speaker thing is a good idea... but I like to tape an old radio to my handlebars, like Tom Warren used to. Just an FM radio.

Studies have shown that music can increase your endorphins, arenaline, etc, during a workout -- but only if the music varies in tempo. [Listening to THE TWELVES for 2 hours straight, although cool, could hurt your performance.]

BTW... wouldn't the level of danger when listening with earbuds depend on WHERE YOU'RE RIDING ? Country roads vs. Downtown ?

Don't focus on the time. Just get yourself to a doable speed for yourself and attempt to maintain it. Steady pace. Don't ride the day before and make sure you sleep well the night before. Eat well before the race and during whenever your body tells you you need more sustenance. Stay hydrated and you will be fine.
