Roundhouse
Charles Hazlewood presents an All Star line up including Rachel and Becky Unthank, Adrian Utley (Portishead), Charlie Jones (Goldfrapp), and members of his period instrument orchestra Army of Generals.
Original opera of folk tunes with lyrics by John Gay, additional music by Handel & Purcell
The Beggar’s Opera changed Lo...ndon’s theatrical landscape overnight when it was first performed in 1728: using the music of London’s streets and a villainous cast of gangsters, gamblers, whores, highwaymen and assorted libertines in an explosive and derisive tirade against the class system, political corruption and the musical establishment.
But The Beggar's Opera lost its teeth over the years as the great British folk tunes Gay employed disappeared from our culture. Charles Hazlewood's reimagining of these songs injects some 21st century fire into muscular old tunes, as well as the music by Handel and Purcell that Gay so savagely satirised. From songs recreated exactly as they would have sounded to groove-laden walls of psychedelia, this workshop performance reclaims our musical heritage for now. The audience should come expecting to sing!
