"These areas need better treatment and prevention services not just more law enforcement. " << I believe this is the foundation for ANY reliable drug policy. Without programs that can help get people on track QUICKLY and for FREE, we are only fighting an uphill battle.

The next most important belief of mine, is that CORRECT and TRUE Drug and Alcohol (and nicotine) USE and ABUSE education need to be practiced. The old system of lies has nobody believing anything... even though a new/future user might see the danger and destruction themselves, new/future users think "those people" are the exception, when in fact that may just be them not trusting the information they have received thus far.

Diversion from jail ties into the Treatment Plan. More lives are ruined by drug convictions, than the drugs themselves. ... Read More

Don't get me started, I could go on forever. ;-D

yeah pot is really harmless and I like stories like these as well because I once was a pretty well know athlete in high school and I smoked up before every wrestling match, football game & baseball game. I was very successful in each sport. I agree with each one of you on this one. They do need to leave him alone and I'm sure the gov't knows they ... Read Morecould make alot of money on legalizing pot but they just can't get everyone on the same page to get enough votes. Just imagine how much crime rate would fall if it were legalized lol...i could go on and on about this all day.

The point concerning the "wiping out the cartels" argument isn't about WHO is buying their grass, but rather about HOW MUCH is being bought. Its fairly naive to believe that everyone can afford the same high quality buds that you and I choose to indulge in. Regardless of how poor quality it is (from experience; I would rather not smoke than to ... Read Moresmoke the dirt ive tried from mexico), the fact of the matter is that we can economically cripple (specifically, cut upwards to 70% of their profit) the violent organizations that are creating a third-world environment on the border of the United States by simply legalizing marijuana. That simply provides no incentive for an illegal business to market that product because it can (and will) be marketed in legal markets at much cheaper prices. Consider potentially ANY business losing 60%-70% of their profit. Thats 60%-70% less guns, less personnel, less soldiers, less payoffs to corrupted officials, and any other costs they use their profits to cover. You can't fight them because they have the money to buy politicians and officials willing to look the other way. It has to be an economic attack.

The simple argument is this........plain and simple....there is still an insatiable appetite for cocaine. In addition, crystal meth is becoming a more widespread problem by the day and will eventually reach crack-like proportions. Although I would pray that legalizing weed would cripple the Cartel. Look at Mexico now, they have fully legalized ... Read Moreminor possesion. Hasn't stemmed use of any drug there. Anyway, if they legalize pot they would have to legalize all the other drugs to end the Cartel. Cliff, you seem like a smart economist. Simple supply and demand and shifting principles. If weed demand is down, shift your attention to coke. Increase the quality and ouilla. Trust and believe. Weed legalization, alone, will not deter or cripple the Cartel. You are underestimating their business savy. These guys will find something, create a demand for it, and corrupt politicians who want to profit from the illegal punishment, will all cavort at the mere ignorance we display when falling for such tactics. To eradicate the Cartel, would be like ending the corruption in America and Mexico, and no simple strategy employed by any fringe group in America will stop it. It will require a concerted effort by ALL Americans. We as Americans are too divided though. We can't seem to agree on shit, as this thread displays, so divided the Cartel shall flourish. This is not my hope or desire, just an admission regarding the brutal realities of capitalism. If you care to take a closer look, compare one politician, who is FOR prohibitions, campaign contributions, then look at the funds raised by MPP, NORML, and SSDP. The results are striking. Throw in there, say, 1 % of the Cartel's proceeds, not from weed, from cocaine or meth, and you will begin to understand why this phenomenon is occuring!

legalized marijuana for who? Lest we forget that more than HALF of MJ arrests (in MA) are of people UNDER 21?! So if it's only legalized for 21+ the arrest rate wouldn't be touched very much and the government would only be getting HALF of the revenue it could if it legalized it FOR EVERYONE.
