Hard question -- like "which is your favorite child or friend?" For me the most *meaningful* performance (as an amateur participant) was of Bach's St. Matthew Passion, although there are many that have come close.

When I was performing these kind of works in an amateur choir, I developed the habit of writing an e-mail to my coworkers analyzing the work. I'm not sure how much *they* cared, but for me that act of analysis really moved my understanding & appreciation of the work to another level.
