Wendy, fish actually grow on low lying vines. That's probably why you've never seen a fish tree.

Solving our global fisheries crisis will require global solutions, and involvement from everyone. Making good choices about the seafood we eat is a great way for each of us to do our part.

i will eat soybeans, tempeh, and tofu as well as some cheeses and othe dairy products. also shirataki (soy) noodles. what you don't want to do is start buying soy based imitation chicken fingers, tofurkey and fake steaks etc, because they have a lot of colorings and flavorings added to them. however, veggie burgers and sausage taste good & are good for you.

what about the fact that most soy is genetically modified and the seeds are owned by Monsanto? I think its best to eat local, try to buy from farmer's markets or direct from a farm and after that, organic, ethically produced and sustainable foods.

Thought should also be given to human labour conditions in regards to how your food is obtained.

Todd

Todd I love the iPhone app and appreciate that you update it regularly! Is there a mechanism for asking for fish to be added? Our local Meijer (a regional Midwest mega-grocery) offers 'ocean perch' from Norway, but the only listing for 'ocean perch' (under Rockfish) in the current version of the app implies that it's only... from the Pacific. Thanks for all your work!

Eric Bowman I hope that all aquariums join Seafood Watch because they may be the only interface that people have with the ocean. It is far too easy to let horrifically destructive fishing practices occur when they happen out of sight beneath the water. Aquariums have the ability to reveal the beauty and importance of the oceans and motivate people in making educated choices.

Thinking about the carbon footprint of shipping food...especially highly perishable food like fish. Frozen products that don't require overnight shipping reduce the footprint. And the seafood industry has come a long way with their freezing technology in the past few years. I'd now choose seafood frozen at sea over anything "fresh". But looking at the broader picture, eating locally and in season continues to be the best rule. Save long-distance foods for a special occasion?
