Excellent; written so it applies to so many aspects of life, and probably many careers and endeavors. Certainly relates to the education world. Constant testing has moved education to be about preventing the downside rather than creating the upside.

Mark points us to this great set of stats. Basically, all of the clicks for all the ads online come from only 16% of the surfers, and most of them come from just 4% of all internet users. So, if...

Often internet advertising is blown out of proportion vs. traditional media like TV and radio. They are more effective often times on a reach x frequency basis to target the mass consumer. Internet is better at target audiences.

Good one Seth! For the love of vegetarians (and people like me who are allergic to red meat) bacon should be opt in. This can be as simple as listing it as an ingredient on the menu - you can just choose something else. When they give you bacon bits on your salad without asking first, it's just plain ignorant!

Slicing apart someone without that persons explicit permission while part of the persons body still works shouldn't be "opt out".
It's just too invasive.

I agree, but today on Oprah, when I was rebounding, there was a very happy couple who won $5.5 million, paid off their home, remodeled and are traveling the world. I was disappointed that they had not done anything charitable, with the exception of occasionally anonymously picking up checks of other tables when out for dinner.

Seth is great at this. Some customers are really better than others as we've always known in direct marketing. The LTV of the customer varies..and you have to treat the best ones...Great.

Dunbar's number is 150. And he's not compromising, no matter how much you whine about it. Dunbar postulated that the typical human being can only have 150 friends. One hundred fifty people in the tribe. After that, we just aren't...

I agree that social media's general definition of friends is not what is being defined here. After the initial contact most FB friends become nothing more than commenters that like to talk about themselves or their opinions. Hardly the definition of friends Dunbar had in mind.
I would go farther than Dunbar and say to have even 10 good friends that you interact with on an intimate level is extraordinary in todays context.

What we forget is that 150 is a very good number when ideas go viral. It's not how many people you know but who they know and who they communicate with.

I think even your body has a way of indicating to you that you are on the wrong path or in the wrong place and when you quit it has a way of telling you that the worse is over and behind you and now you can move on - and relief washes all over you.

Christensen graphs a series of sequential lagging curves, all with the components of The Dip. Should you always keep your eye on the lagging curve so you can jump when The Dip starts? Does this conflict with "going all out"?

My first take is that someone misjudged Seth, and he wishes they would have given him a chance to explain what really happened because they would understand he is a hero rather than thinking he is a clod. :)
Relating to marketing.. the essence of a marketer's job is to understand the customer so well that one can predict customer behavior with a ... Read Morefair amount of certainty (hence generating sales and repeat sales). To Seth's point (I think), a marketer does not get to that point without a lot of empathy and observation and dialogue and listening to the customer. It brings to mind Steven Covey's habit of "Seek first to understand."
https://www.stephencovey.com/7habits/7habits-habit5.php If your first priority is not listening, you will miss the best information and ideas coming from the customer. And to Keith's point, if all you do is listen, you will miss the opportunity altogether. It has to be a constantly iterative process of both listening and implementing.
