Modernity in the west and Asian art are inextricably linked. Without Japanese prints, Impressionism might never have happened (and all of modern art as a result). On the other side, the trends and technologies of early American photography had a huge influence on Japanese, Chinese, and Korean photographers (click below... to see more in our current shows). In 1957 we had one of our first major shows here addressing these connections, "Art in Asia and the West" which looked at cultural and religious aspects of Asian art important for American art. The show also included American artists incorporating factors of Asian culture (Buddhism, styles, traditions) into their production. All of this seems very fitting for a city with such a rich, complex, painful, and beautiful history of Asian/American interaction.Read More

SFMOMA (San Francisco Museum of Modern Art) 1956 was a big year in art! Jackson Pollock died, Robert Frank traveled the US making the most important photography book of the 20th century, Pirkle Jones & Dorothea Lange made "Death of a Valley" (below), & we were increasing national awareness of West Coast art. Any additional 1956 points of interest?

ONE WORD: COCKETTES. This is an (awesome) headline you'll find at sfmoma.org today. I seriously doubt that in 1954 (when we partnered w/MoMA Film Library to become a center for experimental film) that anyone could have foreseen us hosting a retrospective about a group that epitomized North Beach-drag queen-LSD fueled-s...how tunes-brilliance. But guess what? On 12/3 WE ARE! (we've come a long way in 55 years) Several original Cockettes will be here IN PERSON and we'll be watching classics like "Tricia's Wedding" and "Elevator Girls in Bondage." Honestly, if you want a real taste of what made SF the counter culture graceland it is, skip the guys selling questionable wares at Haight Ashbury and come rock out with the Cockettes (out).Read More

Post a link to your favorite Bay Area mural! From Coit Tower to the Mission District to the works of the San Pancho Art Collective (featuring many SFMOMA staff), SF is a mural Mecca. But did you know that in 1953, Grace McCann Morley (the heart + soul of early SFMOMA) fought to preserve Anton Refregier’s WPA murals at ...the Rincon Center Postal Annex (which had been blasted as communist propaganda)? Well now you do. Now share some awesome mural links below!Read More

A colleague and I took a little field trip for the last hour of our day last Friday to catch the Avedon show at the SFMOMA before it goes away at the end of this month. What can I say? It’s divine.

SFMOMA (San Francisco Museum of Modern Art)
Alcatraz, Cable Cars, Haight Ashbury... excellent places for discovering genuine French people holding maps & taking pictures (oh mais, ne vous fâchez pas! On vous kiffe grave les saifrans et vous le savez). However, for a real dose of Bay Area art, people, & beauty go to Fort Mason. Invented in the late 1940's as the ...1st art rental service in the US, the SFMOMA Artists Gallery is a treasure trove of Bay Area art. You can buy, rent (yes, rent art), apply to show your own art, or just walk through and get inspired. Plus, and this is no joke, the building is on the water and has the best view of the Golden Gate IN THE CITY. And did we mention that Greens Restaurant next door is an amazing vegetarian experience? Honestly, next time you have guests in town go to the Artists Gallery & convince everyone you're a real SF hepcat (just don't say hepcat, because that would be embarrassing. Also, don't say "Frisco" and for the love of Pete don't mention rice-a-roni).Read More
