1943: SFMOMA (actually SFMA since we weren't "Of Modern" yet) gives
Clyfford Still his first solo exhibition. Some Still quotes for you:
..... "It's intolerable to be stopped by a frame's edge." ....... "How
can we live and die and never know the difference?" ...... "I never
wanted color to be color. I never wanted texture... to be texture, or images to become shapes. I wanted them all to fuse together into a
living spirit."Read More

1942: WWII ARMAGEDDON! Fighting chaos with creativity, the museum helps wounded servicement by piloting art therapy courses (later adopted by the Red Cross). On a related art/end of the world note: this Thursday we're showing Martha Colburn's "Puppets of the Apocalypse" (okay, this is obviously a real stretch to bring ...our historical updates and current programming full circle... but seriously, Thursday's event is going to be awesome and you should RSVP below!).Read More

SFMOMA (San Francisco Museum of Modern Art) If you caught Peter Schjeldahl's New Yorker article on the Philadelphia Museum of Art's Gorky show, here's another piece of history: in 1941 Gorky came to SF and his "Enigmatic Combat" even ended up in our collection. MUSEUM TAKEN HOSTAGE! That's right: 1300 visitors refused to leave "till they had had their fill" on closing night of a Picasso show in 1940. So either people were way more art-passionate 70 years ago OR we all need to step it up a notch. With our 75th only 70 days away you can't help but daydream about an awesome happ...ening at SFMOMA (think flashmobs & spontaneous dance videos http://bit.ly/19WvJT). Maybe we're all too connected to the internet these days to get out in SF... but it sure would be cool if someone took over the SFMOMA Haas Atrium (*cough* free public space *cough*). Just a thought... :)Read More

SFMOMA (San Francisco Museum of Modern Art) We are now 71 days away from our 75th Anniversary, and today we remember 1939: the year we displayed Picasso's "Guernica" (1st time it was shown in a museum in the US, despite what wikipedia might tell you). Long live art denouncing violence and hate!

The Walt Disney Family Museum is now open in SF! BUT... awesome historical tidbit: in 1938 we actually had the 1st exhibition of Disney art EVER. Yes, really. Grace McCann Morley (1st director & heart of the museum) displayed cels from Snow White to encourage finding art in everyday life (personal opinion: that is so c...ool). So, as part of the ongoing timeline of our 75 years we'd love to read some comments about what YOU find beautiful in your everyday life. It doesn't have to hang in a gallery to inspire, and if anything art should inspire us to find beauty in the unexpected. Hope to get some comments!Read More
