Wow...what a simple-minded article...how exactly does that finding show that "situations trump personality"?...if personality was not important, why did anyone stop in the high-hurry condition and why did anyone not stop in the low-hurry condition?...the study merely shows that situations have an effect and says nothing about the relative power of ... See Moresituations and personality...to do that you'd need compare effect sizes (which typically go unreported in social psychological studies because they tend to focus purely on statistical significance testing)...Funder and Ozer (ref below) present the effect size for that study, which was about .40...and even if you wanted to compare effect sizes it is not clear what the appropriate comparison conditions should be...but what is really mind boggling is that the author of the article seems to be stuck in the 1970s mindset in thinking that demonstrating a situation has an effect has any relevance for the effect of personality...as David Funder has clearly shown, the two components--situations and personality--are logically independent...the fact that extraverts talk more than introverts (a personality effect) has no bearing on the fact that people generally talk more at parties than in the library (a situation effect)...similarly, the fact that people generally help less when in a hurry than not when in a hurry (a situation effect) has no bearing on the fact that some people are more inclined to offer help than are others (a personality effect)...sheesh, I thought we'd got past that way of thinking 30 years ago!
