This article is incredibly misleading. The federal government requires that a portion of stimulus money for child care be spent on programs like this—quality improvement. As much as they may have wanted to, DCD was not allowed by federal guidelines to spend it to help working families pay for child care. While we agree... that much more needs to be done to help families, it is blatantly wrong to suggest this funding could have been used for other purposes. Doing so would have put all of the child care funding provided by the stimulus funds in jeopardy. What's your reaction?Read More

Some question the $140,000 trip when 41,000 children are on the waiting list for subsidized care.

I think people have a tendency to see their own needs, no matter what they are, as more important than other needs. Every program supported through Smart Start has experienced limitations on available funds and all these programs are important! The problem is that the needs are great in all areas of early childhood care and some funds come with restrictions as to their use.

Alexis Tyler I would love to know why when u first sign up for this program they tell you its for parents who are in school and working then when u inform them that u r no longer work they take u off the list. That makes it harder for you to continue your education so that your children will not be on foodstamps b/c childcare in wake county is very exsepensive

I'm very sorry that you are having a difficult time accessing assistance. I am going to email you directly with someone in Wake County to follow up with as I don't know your specific circumstances. As you say, child care subsidy is critical to families. It's also critical to the state. Getting people back to work and helping our economy recover cannot happen if parents do not have a quality child care program.

This ranking in infant mortality is shocking and disturbing! Not a good indicator for our health care system nor the lifestyle choices in the US...among a host of other factors.

Vivian E Muzyk I'm sad to be missing NCPC's first annual pie baking contest. I may need to stop by the Chatham Marketplace's dessert counter to ease my blues. Please share photos if you have them.

I thought I'd give an alternative to sweet and get lunch out of it at the same time. Mike Capp's pecan pie won, it was very tasty.
