Music literacy does not make you an expert of what 'the people' will like. I don't think they were thinking of whether anyone else but them would like it when they wrote it. If you don't like it, then you choose not to choose love then. If opinions matter, I like the song for what it is, a love song...nothing wrong with the pitch or harmony here.
