how about a diabetes friendly cookbooks usually in the WELL FOR Life section, and some soy nuts from the bins their half the fat of regular nuts, if they don't have a glucose monitor that's a must, maybe some of that fancy balsamic vinegar in the pretty bottles and a jar of herbes de provence, and a pretty smell aroma candle to remind them of the importance of stress reduction to keep blood sugars lower.

When you want to season something you're cooking in a pan, put the lid on for a minute or two to build up some condensation on the underside of the lid. Remove lid, sprinkle in your seasonings, replace lid. Seasonings "drip" down onto the food.
My mom always made her fried chicken like that. She seasoned the lid with garlic salt and a bit of pepper. YUM
