I used to quip that I could write faster than I could read. And it was almost true.I've been a fairly good typist ever since I taught myself by attempting to write a mystery novel at age 10 or so. I got to 83 pages of single-spaced text. That's when I went back to read what I had written...

...not being a proponent of a "the world's getting perpetually worse" mentality is not necessarily Biblical. . . . I'm not necessarily a proponent of "the end is coming, the end is near!!!" but the Bible does tell us that things will get worse... (2 Timothy 3:2 is but one example...)
This -- in and of itself -- is reason to home educate.

I started my summer-birthday youngest child at 5 in Core K this fall, and now she is getting a break from school because she is just not as ready as I thought! I can start up again after Christmas if she's ready, or try Kindergarten again next fall, or whatever I need to do for her! I am so thankful to be able to homeschool!

What is everyones opinion of SL LA? I am having a difficult time making a decision for 2nd grade which we will start in Jan. My daughter is 6 and will be seven in July, I plan on buying Core K, just confused about the LA, I think I am gonna go with MUS for math. I have read a lot of reviews and have heard the good and... the bad. I have been looking at First Language Lessons, and WWE by Bauer, we used MFW for first grade. Also looked at Abeka language, and my daughter does enjoy the workbook in small amounts. Any advice would be appreciated!!!Read More

Have you had a chance to check out our Language Arts samples? You can find them at: http://www.sonlight.com/samples.html. Click on the Instructor's Guide drop-down and choose the Language Arts sample that matches the Readers you plan to use.

I feel it's a very solid program. The spelling and grammar components are well done, but the reason to use it has to lie in it's writing assignments. SL keeps the assignments fun, and yet challenging, so that my girls look forward to writing. They provide samples for each assignment so that you and your child know where the bar is set. Finally, they ask for a variety of writing styles, including poetry, narrative, and research reports.

I was gone since Saturday morning because I was in California for my father-in-law's memorial service. For those of you who are friends with my wife on Facebook, that isn't a big surprise. For the rest of you... that may have come out of the blue. Sorry about that...

Hello... need a little advice if anyone can help! My daughter will be coming home for school (yeah!) in just a couple of weeks. She is in PS third grade right now. She is 8 and will turn 9 in July. She is an excellent reader (Sixth grade level) and does well in all other subjects. She struggles a little with m...ath, but has no trouble keeping up with her class. I am wondering where to start her in Sonlight? I would like to get a Newcomer Package -- Should I do Newcomer 2 or Newcomer 3? I am leaning towards 3 because of the reading selections, but want to be accurate with the math. Can anyone help??Read More

College tuition costs are huge. That's why scholarships are so helpful. I was awarded an academic scholarship as well as a small sports scholarship for swimming. That money ultimately paid for almost a complete year at my university...

Great thoughts, everyone. Love seeing discussion start up because of my blog <smile>.

I, too, would like to believe that people are making these stories as parables or nice stories to help communicate something. However, when they start their presentations with "this really happened..." ...well... it makes it harder for me to see the purity of their motives.

And, yes, the Auto Tune video cracked me up as well. <smile>... Read More

Brittany is a young mom. She has the common frustrations, fears and failures. The kids act up. She wonders if she's having a positive impact. She gets upset (but no more than her husband)...

Katie, Brittany was homeschooled through high school... and she turned out so well I married her <smile>. So, I think your kids will be fine.

Oh, and we totally made it into a great University. Brittany was even part of the special "honors program thingy" <smile>.

Yanked from the BlogosphereI'm so sorry, friends! I haven't been around the blogosphere because other things have pulled me away. This means I currently have 911 unread items in my RSS reader. I have a lot to do to catch up with all of you!Unfortunately, the rest of this month will be pretty crazy...

Tip of the Day:Keep the things you've made just in case.I needed a prop we used a couple years ago for something I was working on today. It was a pizza box that we had dutifully smeared with oil to make it look like it was grease-stained.Pizza DeliveryThankfully, we still had it...

Angela Alley Winders I am so excited. I ordered P4/5 with Readers K yesterday for my 4yo daughter! We homeschooled our oldest daughter for 3 years (2 with Sonlight) and now she's back in public school (8th grade), but I really want to homeschool my youngest 2 daughters from day 1 and I can't wait to "officially" start Sonlight with my middle daughter!!!!!

Carol Cowan

Carol Cowan Hi, Sonlighters from a few years ago will remember me as Carol in NZ. My kids have finished homeschooling now, so I am waiting for the next generation to teach. I am still reading my way through Sonlight books I didn't get around to reading when the kids were home.

I loved reading the books even more than my daughter did. Now that she's back in public school, I've noticed her reading a few of the books we didn't get to in Core 6. That makes me very happy!
