Soul-Sides.com Noz resurrects a lost ATCQ/Brand Nubian demo cut that - had it come actually come out - would have been one of the most homophobic songs of its era. Makes Eminem look like a Gay Pride parade marshal.

By much delayed request. “Show Buisness” seems like one of the more “conscious” moments of Tribe’s career, educating misled youth on how to not get took by shiesty record execs. ...

Soul-Sides.com RZA leaving sampling behind? Say it isn't so!

Source: www.butterteam.com
NPR recently chronicled the story of a sample - in this case, The Charmels' 1967 single "As Long As I've Got You" - which RZA copped for "C.R.E.A.M." on 1993's Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers). That opening piano tinkle from the Stax house band (which often included Isaac Hayes or Booker T. ...

Mainstream R&B radio, retail and video industries never had cause to pay retro-soul much mind until Amy Winehouse demonstrated its commercial potential. (Sean Gallup / Getty Images Entertainment )

Ben: Not really. For one thing, most of Dreamgirls sounds absolutely nothing like Motown; I always though that was one of the weird problems with the music in the film. And part of what makes retro-soul retro is that it literally sounds like its from that era. You wouldn't confuse an Outkast song with something recorded in 1969.

Kevin: I don't have a great answer to your question, hence my point about it not being "fully explained." I have better explanations for why retro-soul is appealing to White listeners. What I have re: the absence of Black listeners is more spurious and likely requires more research.

I'll say this much, it was interesting to note that I own a fair amount of 7"s in the $75-125 range but I haven't pushed past that very much except for stuff like Pleasure Web and Skye, both of which could probably sell upwards $200 but only on a really good day). I own, I think, only two singles that would easily move for more than that (Soul ... Read MoreCavaliers + Pure Essence). In contrast, it seems that I've been willing to spend more on LPs consistently even though I've been enjoying 7"s a lot more. Psychologically though, it seems like I have a resistance to throwing down heavy on a single vs. on an LP even though, in many cases, I may only be chasing after 1-2 songs on an LP.

Soul-Sides.com As much as I love NPR (and like contributing to them), this list is a bit too "appropriate for audience." How is it that there were only TWO R&B albums of note in the entire decade?! And Little Brother? "Carter 3" > "Carter 2"? Yeesh.
