Michael Offerman Thanks for doing the giveaway.

Brad Ashton

Brad Ashton I sure hope we can get a trade in price for the newer version and transfer the account. I have had the original for a year and do not carry it much any more because the clip does not keep it secure due to it's size. I even bought the carry case and that clip broke catching on things due to it's size.

Ray Middleton Yes Spot 2 does have a cover over the 911 help button to eliminate accidental activation. Same tracking features.

Ray Middleton Spot 1 $49.95 Spot 2 $170.00 I would go with the original. The newer one is smaller, has one additional feature that send custom messages in addition to OK check in message. Not that big of a deal for me.

I have the old Messenger unit (SPOT 1). New Messenger unit (SPOT 2) has advantages (size, GPS acquisition time, etc.) but battery life is significantly shorter. Also, the SPOT organization has no way to "transfer" the account from SPOT 1 to new version (SPOT 2). Guess I will have to live with the issues with the old... SPOT 1 unit.

My main problem comes when ending Tracking and wanting to send an OK message. I have to end tracking, power up again, wait about 20 secs then hit "OK". But, the OK message is sometimes not sent. I have to repeat it several times. I suspect it can't find GPS location but have no way of knowing waht is going on inside SPOT unit.

I think the SPOT 2 has an indicator to indicate GPS lock? That would help.

I use my SPOT in an airplane. It generally does a good job but the GPS acquisition is a problem. Ending "tracking" and sending an "OK" is laborious. It takes me multiple efforts to get an OK message thru after powering down tracking and back up for an "OK" message.

Customer service answers are slow. I initially asked about when I had to renew my subscription. no answer -- then -- BANG -- my credit card was charged for another year.
Here is what I got from SPOT asking to "transfer" from my SPOT 1 to a SPOT 2.

"The Spot 1 unit you activated on account XXXX renewed for another year's service on October 28. The renewal charge of $XXXX (Basic, Tracking, GEOS Search & Rescue benefit, plus taxes), billed to your XXXX.

The Spot version 2 unit is available right now in limited release through select retailers (including REI and Best Buy), and we expect it to be in wider release in time for the holiday season. At this time, there is NOT a procedure in place to simply transfer the service from your Spot 1 to Spot 2 device.

If you only intend to have one unit active, and are looking to activate a Spot 2, we would advise you to contact Customer Service, open Monday to Friday, from 8:00 am to midnight EST. Your renewal occurred a short time ago, and you are still within the period where you can deactivate your service and request a refund. Once you're beyond this grace period, your term would be non-refundable.

He is currently about 250 miles SW of Isla Guadalupe. I've created a FB group called Iwalani Voyage 2009--join the group to follow his trip.
