fyi, for those without the benefit of hindsight (which I now have way too many years of), the MAIN value of a college education -- and the main way in which the elites separate themselves -- is actually the kids you sit next to in school.

During the experience you learn from them and for the next 30 years (more, I assume), you have a network of, ... Read Moreand connection with, amazing people in doing amazing things. This is where any significant economic advantage comes from, but is also leads to an incredible level of "soft" advantages that you can never predict or anticipate at the age of 17 or 18.

If you are still taking questions: Stanford has some incredible fund managers at SMC, is there a reason staff are not provided this as an opportunity to invest their 403B? Even when things are bad it isn't as bad, and when they are good it tends to do better. I know this may be a common questions but I don't recall the answer and it is certainly of interest to staff. Thank you.

Dear Provost Etchemendy

Thank you for the open office hours:

I have several questions about academic programs in Stanford.... Read More

1. I want to be a Professor in my future career and what characteristics, do you think, make a professor popular or renowend in his field?

2. What are the best methods of teaching students with technology?

3. How should Professors approach his/her students for close interaction?

Yours sincerely,

Hi Mike,
Siting of wind farm requires a good understanding of the local wind distribution for throughout the year. This knowledge is generally obtained using a combination of observations and computer modeling. Once a site is identified, the actual placement of the turbines requires another modeling stage where interference between turbines is ... Read Morestudied and also the impact of the turbines (which are drag barriers) on the actual wind profiles. This stage is very important and if not done correctly, it is possible to greatly underutilize the available resource. The initial placement in Pacheco Pass, CA, for example, was not ideal and over the years, turbines have been repositioned to get larger efficiencies.
How much of the earth is suitable depends a bit on your criteria. LArge areas could generate wind energy, but often there are competing uses of land that must be taken into account. All studies however indicate that wind could supply a very large part of the global electricity demand.

Fascinating stuff! Thanks so much for responding. Wind Energy seems like such an under-championed power source. And given the past few windy days, I've been reminded of how strong wind can be.
