This is good to hear. Unfortunately not early enough for some of us who have had the misfortune of hiring an attorney who disclosed the paternity results in front of the children. Only to find out later that he(attorney) was already on probation. Still unsure as to what to do about this situation, especially since it caused alot of choas(as you can probably imagine).

In 2008, more than 70,000 Texas children were confirmed victims of abuse or neglect. Of these, more than 31,000 children were placed in foster care and more than 14,000 were placed in the permanent managing conservatorship of the state.

In Texas, children who have active court cases are provided with a court-appointed ...attorney and guardian ad litem to help protect their interests and well-being. For children who are placed under the permanent managing conservatorship of the state, the judge assigned to their case will review the children's living arrangements and needs every six months. However, since the initial abuse case is now concluded, in some counties these children are no longer provided with court-appointed advocates. Thus, there are abused and neglected children who are living under the permanent managing conservatorship of the state who need an attorney to ensure that their rights and interests are being protected.

The Texas Young Lawyers Association (TYLA) and Dallas-based nonprofit Texas Lawyers for Children are partnering to recruit and train volunteer lawyers from around the state to serve as attorneys and/or guardians ad litem for abused and neglected children who are in managing conservatorship. These attorneys help ensure that the children have suitable living arrangements and that their emotional, physical, and educational needs are being met.

I couldn't agree more. The children need representation, because oftentimes the State does not take the time to read the Texas Family Code for what it is. They interpret the code the way they "need" to interpret it at that moment. There is a serioius lack of meticulous investigative detail within the system that allows so many children to fall ... Read Morebetween the cracks. Texas is the highest state in child deaths. That's what happens when inexperienced caseworkers are assigned to investigate serious abuse. There is a ridiculously high turnover in CPS and those who stay inherit abandoned casesloads. This leads to more turnover due to the demands and the cycle continues. Eventually these cases are rushed through by some poor sap that inherited seriously delinquent caseloads and has a moron for a supervisor telling them that they need to "hurry up and close it" without the attention it deserves. People on both sides become victims of the system.

Do you want to be a lawyer?

Working as a lawyer means helping people and businesses solve their problems. To succeed, you must be able to think logically, critically, and creatively. In college (and ideally before) you should focus on becoming an organized thinker; a strong communicator, both in speech and writing; and ...team player who works well with others. Do not choose the least demanding courses in order to earn a high GPA. Pursue a broad and challenging education that provides ample alternatives if you decide not to enter the legal profession.
