STAX music in the 60's gave me hope. I spent so much time listening to Booker T & the MG's in New Albany Mississippi. I'm pretty sure it was Summertime and Hip-Hug-Her on the juke box at the community center that started it all for me. I wanted to be Al Jackson. Listen to Summertime and you will hear (among other things) a group of musicians that have total trust in their drummer. (It's so slow with no hi-hat or ride cymbal to fill the gaps.) Damn! Pure FEEL.

One of the icons of soul music is Al Bell, the driving force behind Stax Records. Bell has returned to his roots in Memphis, Tennessee, to rekindle the music scene he dominated for decades.

I didn't have jack growing up in Mississippi in the mid and late 60's... but I had the music coming outta Memphis and outta this studio in particular. I had the rare opportunity to buy an album and thank God I bought Booker T & the MG's. Thank God for Al Jackson and the rest of the boys. This music totally took you ...to another place - it created that other place. I am forever grateful to STAX for this peice of me. Visit the museum. Go back home. That's what it is - home.Read More
