Location & General Information
The Barbecue Challenge will take place—rain or shine—Saturday, August 8, at Citizens Bank Park along
Citizens Bank Way (west side of the ballpark between the left-field and the third-base gates).
The gates open to contestants for registration, set up, and cooking at 6:30 a.m. Judging will s...tart with
chicken at 4:00 p.m. The event is open to the public from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Admission to the
Barbecue Challenge is free, and the event features children’s games, a classic car display, a performance
by the Give and Take Jugglers, and guest judging by Phillies alumni. Visitors can sample barbecue and
other foods from contestants in the Restaurant/Catering Division by purchasing sampling tickets (3 for
$10) and redeeming them at participating stands while supplies last. Pit masters are not permitted to share
food with the public.
The Stephen Starr-Garry Maddox Barbecue Challenge is an important fundraising vehicle for the Youth
Golf & Academics Program, a non-profit organization founded by Garry Maddox to provide academic
support and enrichment services to children in grades K-8 who reside in troubled city neighborhoods.
Garry volunteers his time as president of the organization.Read More
