CAFEINA, WYNWOOD’S NEWEST RESTAURANT-LOUNGE-ART GALLERY
TO HOST SNEAK PREVIEW DURING ART BASEL 2009
Artists Carlos Alves, Ilana Lilienthal & Johnny Robles to showcase works at grand opening Satuday, December 5 from 7 PM to 4 AM. Enjoy complimentary cocktails & light bites 7 PM to 10 PM. Ear candy provieded by DJ Johnny ...The Boy & Dutch.
Miami, FL – (November 16, 2009) -- Wynwood Art District newcomer Cafeina, a restaurant-lounge-art gallery, will host a special preview cocktail reception and feature works by ceramic assemblagist Carlos Alves, sculptor Ilana Lilienthal, and street artist Johnny Robles. The installations will be showcased at Cafeina’s indoor/outdoor space, located at 297 Northwest 23rd Street in Miami.
Cafeina, the brainchild of owner Ivette Naranjo, has been realized by designer Pepe Calderin. The lounge will merge the worlds of art and nightlife, boasting a 1,560-square-foot lounge and mezzanine styled in a warm manor-esque décor. Adjacent to the main room is a 1,000-square-foot art gallery, with an accompanying 5,000-square-foot garden for outdoor exhibits. Nestled a few doors down from Purvis Young Studios in the heart of the Wynwood Art District, the art gallery-lounge hybrid will be the new spot for the intellectually-curious.
Cafeina is slated to be the first venue launched in the neighborhood with a full liquor license. Aside from the classic martini, signature cocktails using coffee as the main ingredient pay homage to the lounge’s name and will keep guests caffeinated into the early hours of the morning. Executive Chef Guily Booth, whose crab cakes were recently heralded by Martha Stewart as “the best she’s ever had,” will satisfy patrons’ palates. Other items on the tapas style menu include: Miniature Kobe Burgers ($11), Tuna Tacos ($13) served with pomegranate mayo, and Shrimp Lollipops ($12) in a passion fruit marinate. “Wynwood Art District has become Miami’s version of the ‘SoHo’ reincarnation. Each new restaurant, gallery and shop that opens here adds character to the area and breathes new life into Wynwood. Cafeina is another piece of that puzzle,” says Naranjo.
Cafeina’s Art Basel preview will feature works by three Miami artists, including a pet-themed installment by Carlos Alves, titled Animal Instincts. The ceramic assemblagist will bring the 1,000-square-foot art gallery to life by fusing recycled glass tiles with figurines that he has collected over the last eight years to depict large-scale dogs, cats, chickens and pigs, among other animals. Alves, an animal care advocate, draws from his Cuban roots and his South Florida upbringing, and says his themes “encompass love, hope, history, culture, politics and nature. I believe that creating art requires striking a balance between personal expression and working within the parameters of the project. I’m looking forward to seeking that harmony with the space at Cafeina.”
Taking design outdoors is Ilana Lilienthal, a Miami Beach-based artist and “alchemist of the future,” who will fill Cafeina’s garden with the use of her unconventional “sculpainting” technique, described by the artist as “sculpting with light and color and painting beyond canvas."
The special preview will also spotlight street artist Johnny Robles’ “technically and emotionally charged work,” which will be seen on the front walls and gate of Cafeina. As an international student of the arts, Robles has studied in Italy and the United States. Robles is an active member of Primary Flight 2009, the collaborative curatorial organization dedicated to the production of site-specific, street-level mural installations. Since its inception in 2007, Primary Flight has brought together 100 of the world’s most influential street artists to install their bodies of work throughout the streets of Wynwood. Cafeina will become the latest participant in this project which provides a catalyst for burgeoning arts communities.
